JandJoutdoors Posted December 15, 2016 Posted December 15, 2016 I have recently purchased a Huddleston 68 special, and a Savage Gear 3D gill (both 2 ounces) and I have no idea what Rod/Reel to Pair them with. Please shed some light on this subject as I am New to the Swimbait game. (budget for rod 0-$150) (budget for reel 0-$125) Quote
Big Swimbait Posted December 15, 2016 Posted December 15, 2016 My first swimbait set-up was the Okuma Guide Select Swimbait rod with a Lews BB-2Z Wide Spool. Although I have "upgraded", I still use this combo more than any other. The rod is easily in your budget & the reel can be found on fleabay. Also the iRod series of swimbait rods are in your price range and are excellent rods. Another reel option is the Shimano Cardiff A Series in the 400 size if you prefer the round reels (I prefer the Lews low profile). 2 Quote
freelancer27 Posted December 15, 2016 Posted December 15, 2016 I would recommend a iRoD Genesis II and pair it with something like a Lexa 300. That should be possible for below 300 USD. Quote
Robert Riley Posted December 15, 2016 Posted December 15, 2016 Make sure to check out the Dobyn's Fury swimbait rod. Can't give advice on the reel personally. Quote
Super User MassYak85 Posted December 15, 2016 Super User Posted December 15, 2016 The above posts would probably be good choices. I have the guide select and am pretty happy with it. Okuma exaggerates their lure ratings on that rod though. Know that the 7'11" Heavy 1-6oz is really more like a 3/4 - 4. You might also consider if you will want to stay with swimbaiting and go to even bigger lures than what you have. I ind of regret getting the guide select because if I want to start fishing 8" hudds or other heavy lures, I'm going to need a new rod. If I had to do it again I would have looked for a rod rated like 2-8 with an accurate rating. Quote
Scarborough817 Posted December 15, 2016 Posted December 15, 2016 this probably seems weird but for my swimbaits i actually throw them with a tatula 100hs i prefer the 7.3:1 because i can always speed up if i need to bring the fish in i just reel extremely slow for the rod i would say pickup a guide select i have a bass pro bionic blade 7'6" h/mf that works for me but i think the guide select is a good rod and i would have that if i could have found one locally Quote
