Gillroid 9000 Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 Oh i realized in a week or 2, i have a Xmas party which my Troop shares gifts and stuff some Goodies. Now i have 40$ to spend and i have 2 choices to make. Quanity or Quality? For quanity im planning to gift a bunch of Soft plastics and Terminal tackle from Wallyland. For quality im planning to go to D!cks and buy some JDM lures or high end lures from there(Like Keitech,Lucky Craft,Megabass,Jackall,Livetarget,R2S, Gary Yammamoto?) Heres what im planning to buy Quanity=Bunch of assorted soft plastics(Swimbaits,Tubes,Craws,Lizards,Flukes,Senkos ETC) along with Some hooks and sinkers. Quality=Megabass Pop max(Any color they have in stock there),Keitech Crazy Flapper,Swing Impact Fat!,Easy Shiner?,Swing Impact?,Salty core Sticks?,Livetarget Sunfish? Or frog ETC. This is only my thoughts and i have some time to decide. Go for Quality or Quanity? Quote
Super User WRB Posted December 9, 2016 Super User Posted December 9, 2016 Take a look at your starter kit, any lure under $3 is marginal. If you can't afford $5 to $25 lures than bargin hunting makes some sense, otherwise buy fewer lures that are known to have high quality hooks and proven performance. Your goal is to catch bass, not to collect a wide verity of lures. Soft platics; 7" trick worm and 5" Senko. Terminal tackle; 3/16 oz bullet weight for the worms, Owner 3/0 #5100 and 2/0 weedless wacky hooks. Top water; bone or baby bass spook. Crankbait; Norman DD15 Shad color of choice. Jigs, Siebert of choice. Craw trailer for your jig, Berkley 4" Chigger Craw. Focus on those few lures and presentations until you are catching bass consistantly. Merry Christmas. Tom 1 Quote

Oh and the starter kit i made is for a another friend i know. 2 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted December 9, 2016 Super User Posted December 9, 2016 My general rule of thumb is to give someone a gift that they would not buy for themselves. So, I'd go with high end lures. 8 Quote

Super User J Francho Posted December 9, 2016 Super User Posted December 9, 2016 And I'm not talking $20 baits. Say you gotta guy that hasn't really gotten into spinnerbaits. Get him a bunch of Stanley Weedless Wedge, Seibert Cosmicsw, or Strike King Premium, not wally world discount bin. Quote
Super User Scott F Posted December 9, 2016 Super User Posted December 9, 2016 if the recipient of the gift is not an advanced fisherman, he will not appreciate a bait that costs $15 or more. Three $6 baits would be a better choice for most fishermen over one $18 lure, unless you knew for sure that the person getting it really wanted a $20 Megabass Pop Max. Most guys think buying expensive baits is crazy. Go for the quantity. 4 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted December 9, 2016 Super User Posted December 9, 2016 A Popmax is always a great gift, regardless of skill level. I've got five in the box, and the one I opened has accounted for more fish than any other lure the past two years. My 8 yo caught his first fish of the 2016 on it. Poor thing's finish is rubbed raw, but it still catches. Quote

Buy the 1 or 2 lures you would like to have or my suggested package, it's under $30. Tom Quote

It ain't about quality or quantity! It's about caring for the person on the receiving end! Ya could send me a pack of $1 worms from Wally World & I would be just as content! 2 Quote
Super User Raul Posted December 10, 2016 Super User Posted December 10, 2016 With 40 you ain't gonna get much Megabass ..... 1 Quote
jr231 Posted December 10, 2016 Posted December 10, 2016 With 40 bucks... get em a rapala fat rap (6$) a pack of senkos (7$) some gama 3/0 (3.50$) , lead bullet sinkers (2$) , a jig (2-5$) , a pack of rage craws which he could use on the 3/0 hook or the jig. (5$) , zoom super flukes (3$) , SK red eye shad (6$) . And grab a slim Jim for yourself on the way out. 2 Quote
AnthonyBarnaoBASS Posted December 22, 2016 Posted December 22, 2016 Try and see if you have an old buddy that has some excess lures that you can buy from them dirt cheap. I got a bunch of jerk baits for a fraction of the price, we all know how expensive those jerk baits can be God Bless Quote
S. Sass Posted December 22, 2016 Posted December 22, 2016 I love plastics but I fish plastics a lot. Even though its Wally they have name brand baits at least at mine they do. Not necessarily Megabass but Rapala, Mann's, Yamomoto , Strike King, Berkley, Yo-Zuri, ZMan, etc. Many other baits too like Rattle Traps and more. I would gladly add to my Rapala DT colection if someone got me one for Christmas. Some Mann's 12" worms, and numerous ZMan, Berkley, Yamomoto, and Strike King baits would work awesome too. Super User JustJames Posted December 22, 2016 Super User Posted December 22, 2016 It doesnt matter if it high price lure or cheapy wally word plastic as long as it catch fish. you know what work in your area, think like you gonna buy those for yourself. Quote
Super User Spankey Posted December 22, 2016 Super User Posted December 22, 2016 If the person does not have much of the time proven baits or is just starting out, things like Power Worms and Power Grub, jig heads, Gammy Hooks, Rat-L-Traps in chrome /blk. back, chrome w/blue back, gold w/ black back, Rapala floater minnow in silver and gold, Series 3 SK's, Rebel Pop R's, Rebel Craws and stuff like that. Heck on any decent day a basic Rat-L-Trap or Rebel crank craw might out fish any thing going. Quote
