Carterjig68 Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 Coming from the midwest we have some 90 degree summers and some 0 degree winters so rain gear choice can be very important. I've been using frog togg pilots for a few months until i realized how they feel in very cold weather. They seemed to do alright with water and would be solid in the summer, but weren't cutting it in the winter. Decided to pull the trigger on a stormr stryker jacket and bib and can say that it seems like it will end up being worth it. Next on my list are some quality cold weather gloves. Anyone have any favorites for those freezing and wet pre spawn days? Anyone else have any experience with stormr gloves or other gear? Thanks! Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted December 8, 2016 Super User Posted December 8, 2016 I have a Stormr Surf top and just picked up a pair of the stryker bibs on a BF sale. The Surf top is too intense for my needs and I regret not returning it the first time I tried it on. It is so hot that I have yet to see it get cold enough here to use it. We had very heavy snow here last winter and I was able to wear the top with just a thin synthetic t shirt under it in almost perfect comfort in like windy weather in the low 20's. When I started to shovel I overheated very quickly. This isnt a flaw in the garment, but I was silly to think that something designed for standing in cold water all day would be useful for more mundane use. The bibs I have only used once, and that was just walking around the yard in a storm. They did very well for the 20 or so mins I was out there. I had a pair of hiking pants on under them and was very comfortable. I bought them for hiking as I have never found rain pants that I really like at the sale price was low enough to roll the dice on them. As for gloves, I have never found a pair that will let me have enough dexterity to fish and keep warm. Quote

The stryker top seeks a bit less intense than the surf top but it seems plenty warm. Right now i wear under armor gloves in normal conditions which don't really keep my hands dry but help a bit with warmth. During long runs i use ski gloves over them. Quote
IgotWood Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 I have the Stryker jacket and bibs. They are SUPER warm! They really are worth the money. I wear them on a 40 degree day, and they're not too warm. I have also worn them on 10 degree days and was plenty warm. They seem very bulky and cumbersome, but they are actually quite comfortable...not to mention they act as a PFD. The StormR gear alo breaks the wind very well. As for gloves, I prefer wool. Orvis make a fantastic pair of 1/2 finger gloves for about 25 bucks. I carry 3 pairs with me. When they get wet, I take them and give them a good shake to get a lot of the water out. Even when they're wet, they still seem to keep my hand warm. You may also look into Kast Gear gloves. They are pricey, but a few of my friends wear them and they keep you bone dry, and WARM. I would wear them, but I like the simplicity of the wool gloves. Quote
JayKumar Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 Yep try wool with the fingers that you can peel back. I'm gonna test out the Simms neoprene gloves this winter. You can also look up ice fishing gloves.... Quote
