Largemouth21 Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 Is Ardent Reel butter oil ok to put on the worm gear of my Abu Garcia Pro Max. Or should i use Abu Garcia oil. Theres a small amount of oil/grease still on the worm gear and I've heard horror stories of oils/greases of different brands getting gummy inside reels. The reel isnt dirty but it just needs some more oil on the worm gear. Thanks in advance Quote
BobP Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 I use the light oil that I'm using to lube the spool bearings. Worm gears are open to the elements and are prone to having trash and water carried into them by the line as it is retrieved. So I like a thin oil that is less prone to stick to this debris. Ardent makes a bearing oil in its Reel Butter line. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 The incompatibility of lubricants is WAY over dramatized. The soaps (thickeners) used in greases can react but it's not a given. Brush the worm gear clean and oil it up. You'll be fine. 2 Quote
MDbassin Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 I wouldn't worry about using Abu oil/grease for an Abu reel. When I go to clean and lube my reels in the winter I don't even use anything that is marketed as a fishing reel oil. i use balistol to clean all the old grease and oil off then use the same stuff I use for my guns. I either use Rem Oil or Hoppes (side note I love the smell of Hoppes), or I use CLP (the same stuff we used in the Marines to clean our rifles. Or if I want to use a grease I use otters gun grease (I actually think it's called otters choke tube grease for shotguns). i put oil/grease in the same spots it was from the factory... if there was grease there originally I put grease if it was just oily I put oil. Been doing it this way for a few years and never had a problem Quote
Chance_Taker4 Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 I use Ardent Reel Kleen kit on all my reels. Abu, Ardent, Quantum, Okuma Quote
