XH Spinning Rod

Does any use a heavy spinning setup to throw swimbaits? Are there any H or XH spinning rods for doing this?

I would think that a surf rod would do it, I have a "little" one at 9' and like a 5oz max rating and have thought about giving a swimbait a go.  But I don't want to fish it from shore and I don't think I could cast it from my kayak.  If I ever find a friend with a boat (and they don't mind laying on the deck while I cast) I would like to try it.

My wife is spinning only and has a St. Croix Premier that's xhf and she throws some small swim baits (<3oz) with it. If you need to go heavier, look at saltwater rods. Should be plenty of options.

If your anywhere near the Wheeling Cabelas,Yesterday they had a bunch of Okuma Scott Martin swimbait rods in the bargain cave.

The reason I'm asking for this is, I lost an expensive swimbait using a casting rod. The braid dug and then snapped, I was on the bank, so I watched my 55.00 lure sail into the sunset lol.

Sure, but with a spinning reel you risk the bail popping down during the cast and the same thing happening.  I sent a 3oz Kastmater clear across the atlantic doing that last fall.  I have seen guys who have removed the bail wire to prevent this, but I am not there yet.

If you must use braid I would look at inshore saltwater rods.

Sounds like you might be casting too hard. When I switched to braid I had the same problem. Just a flick and it'll sail with the no memory braid. You could go up a little in line size to help with the digging and just be careful after big hooksets.

To be honest I don't think that issue is the result of using the wrong type of reel. Like others have said, spinning reels won't be exempt from issues that could result in the same thing happening. What size braid are you using and what weight was the bait you lost?

He has a point. I personally would stick with the baitcaster, just use thicker braid and/or don't cast so hard

I was using 50lb i believe, this has been a while ago. I'll give it another shot. Thanks for all the replies.

What was the swimbait you were using and how heavy was it? 50lb would be too light if you are throwing 10 inch hudds, but would probably be fine for something like a wooden shellcracker.

I don't think that's too heavy for 50lb, have you considered using a shock leader? 

 

Also, I'm not sure if yours is custom painted or not, but twitch'nNinja's don't retail for 55

I just looked it was 47 for everything, shipping..

Just remember a XH in a freshwater series ≠ a XH in an inshore or saltwater series.  Match line and lure ratings to select the right rod.
