Weights include surf stinkers, nuts, spark plugs, rocks or whatever can be tied on. Oh wow - I get it now. I found one of those contraptions (after untangling a lot of line). A little while later, I found a family using them, so I gave it to them along with the hooks and bobbers I had come across so far. The family looked like money might be an issue, but the kids were having fun fishing, so I thought it was a clever low cost adaptation. That's until someone drops one in the river and it gets to unwrap. Quote

WaterOtter Posted August 6, 2023 Posted August 6, 2023 Yesterday I found a Cotton Cordell Longbill Spot. Goofy lookin lure There are a couple colors I discount in the water because they are used on Bic lighters, bottle caps, and other trash, but not the backs of lures, and this green is one of them, so I almost passed it by. 6 Quote
Super User Team9nine Posted August 6, 2023 Super User Posted August 6, 2023 I usually tend to just find soft plastics at the micro lakes, torn and tattered, but every once in a while stumble across s good hard bait, and today was one of those days A little cleanup, and some new rings and hooks, and I’ll have a nice mid diving Flat A that even has Bill’s autograph on it ? 3 Quote

I would clean very carefully and put a coat of clear fingernail polish on that. Those spots where it bubbles will likely flake off otherwise. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted August 9, 2023 Global Moderator Posted August 9, 2023 Haven't fished a lot lately, and when I do I haven't been finding many baits. When I find one though, it's been a good one it seems. 4 Quote
Bazoo Posted August 9, 2023 Posted August 9, 2023 I found these in the last week. The Rat-L-Trap, in gizzard shad (a color I'd have chose myself), was found at the local city lake, on the bank where a lot of people fish. I went to pull up a gob of fishing line and this was attached to the other end of about 50 feet. It appears it was left in the weeds and then stepped on until it was flush with the surface. The rings are good, but the hooks have disintegrated. On that trip, I went for a nice wade. I'd lost a chatterbait, and then I snagged my worm and hook in the same spot. I had the wife hold the rod so I could trace the line and went in after it. I pulled up a big gob of line with my chatterbait attached. Only a couple sinkers and rusted catfish hooks on the other end. All the rest, I found at my local large pond, I got out there in my boat and first thing scouted the back side of the reeds... Who would through a plopper in that pond I don't know. A buzzbait does okay there but with all the cover, I doubt the plopper seen more than a couple casts. The trap, buzzbait, and Whopper Plopper I've cleaned up with spray nine followed by some hot water, dawn, and scrubbing with a toothbrush. The Whopper Plopper's hooks were still sharp, but there is some finish damage to the them and very light pitting. I cleaned them up with a bronze wire brush so It's usable until I can buy new hooks on my next order. No markings on the buzzbait, so I assume it's a cheap one.. does anyone have a guess on brand or opinion on how it will do with that angle? I've seen one like that before, but I've never used one like that, only the normal shaped ones. Dunno why my pic didnt work, try this. 4 Quote

The Mann’s Baby and Lunkerhunt Frog came out of the same tree… pretty fair chance looking at that rigging they were from the same angler. I wonder what the action was like on that frog. Must have been trying to imitate a tree frog. You gotta be trying pretty hard to lose a frog. Quote

Looks like Walmart to me. They have spinnerbaits they sell for $1 (I think they're still a dollar) that have that same type of rubber skirt and that same color combination. I'm no expert on buzzbaits, but I assume it would swim like a normal buzzbait, only the body would be pointed down at an angle. I would just bend it back into the correct shape. The hooks on almost all the Whopper Ploppers I've ever found were in good shape. Nice trap. That toad is good too, on a keel-weighted hook. On that hook there, it would flip over. Quote

The toad was rigged on that huge hook. I do like the look of the toad, I don't suppose you recognize the brand? I've never fished soft toads like that but I've been wanting to give them a try. Finding that one is just the "kick" I need. Quote

Definitely a Stanley Ribbit. I think that one has a pearl-colored bottom? I used to have good luck with those back when my lake still had some lilypads. It's not easy to get them rigged just right so that the hook stays in place, and being able to get a good hookset at the same time. That plastic is tough, which is good for durability, but it makes setting the hook harder when it's already tricky with topwater. That hook is not terribly oversized, it could work. That looks like maybe a 6/0. I guess they hooked it in the chin and then in the back. I think I used to use a 4/0 or 5/0, depending on the brand of hook. I used to go through the crotch, but that hook looks too long for that. 1 Quote
Pat Brown Posted August 10, 2023 Posted August 10, 2023 @WaterOtter that's a cool one. Looks like it's a design that's along the same lines as the Berkley Frittside and other flat side lipped cranks which always felt like lipless/lipped crankbait hybrids to me. 1 Quote

I inspected it thoroughly before I unrigging it, I should have thought to take the picture beforehand, I'll rig it back and take a picture. The hook did fit, but its the biggest hook that would without the toad straddling it. Quote
Bazoo Posted August 10, 2023 Posted August 10, 2023 I'd guess it would work pretty good staying right side up with that much keel weight from the hook. I cleaned the rust up and rerigged it, heck I'll probably try it. Might be the stuff on the pond I frequent. 3 Quote

This little guy is way flatter than flat sided cranks because it's still as skinny as a rattle trap. In fact, it's totally just a rattle trap with a lip. They also took out the bigger rattle balls to lighten it up so it can float, so the rattle is weak, and it feels too light to cast well with a baitcaster. I would much rather use a Frittside, but this is really cool to get to check out for free. 3 1 Quote

fin Posted August 11, 2023 Posted August 11, 2023 I was curious how that Longbill Spot swam, so I dug up a video. Spoiler: swims like a floating lipless, sort of. 3 Quote

I find two or three every year. This one is intact, but I have found two with broken off spinners, so that's something to be aware of. They are always a thrill to find because they are big and GS's colors are pretty cool. Here are the GS hardbaits I've found so far this year. 2 Quote

Bazoo Posted August 12, 2023 Posted August 12, 2023 I did finally read the whole found lures thread. Very interesting what folks find. Some interesting rigging too. I’ll have to put up some more pictures. Quote
