I catch tons of fish on lipless baits, big ones too.

^RES 2tap in Rayburn Red in February. Ended up being my biggest of the year that year.

So for around $30 in short shank treble hooks, I now have about 30 functionally good-as-new found lipless crankbaits.  So if I lose one (or all!), who cares?  ?

Here's one I found last weekend that I need someone to explain to me.

It is a modestly sized hook with a 48" steel leader on it, probably home made since the leader connects right to the hook. There's a swivel on the top end as though the whole thing might need to spin, and it was tied onto red monofilament, which I associate with low cost Zebco reels.   What kind of fishing situation would this be needed for?

Put new hooks on the bottom two, though I'll never actually use them.* Not sure what happened to the hooks on the Spook. It wasn't near the water. It was in a tree. Weird.

*I can't be the only one who seems to find only the lures/baits that he doesn't actually need!

Cat fish rig for jug, limb or trot lines.

Found minnow type baits.  A couple of expensive River2Sea models and a couple of Rapalas.

That bottom one is a savage gear glide bait.

Yes, only the two top left lures are River2Sea.  On the right, only the very top and bottom are genuine Rapalas.

The middle right is a Rapala Scatter Rap Shad.

Well I would gladly take them off your hands and use them haha. Atleast the glide and spook. That thing in the middle is....?????

Was out today and the fishing sucked but I spotted a crank bait floating and thought well maybe this is all right. Turned out to be a cheap bait with garbage hardware..not sure how to feel about it.

If only I was still in Norman. I'd gladly give them to you, along with the other "never gonna use" lures I've kept!?

Dang. I guess I will have to go find some lost lures myself next time I go out! Haha

I had a fun day on the lake today.  I found 3 rigs that taught me new ways to fish.

Rig #1: Deep diving whopper plopper (I found it snagged on a picnic table 36" down).  This guy used a split shot + a sliding cone sinker + a steel leader

sm2021-09-04IMG_E8844.JPG

Rig #2: Bobber jerk bait

I pick up lost bobbers because they get cruddy and become eyesores, and this time I was surprised by what came out of the water with it.

ssm2021-09-04IMG_E8850.JPG

Rig #3: Caveman rig

I was paddling through an algae mass when my paddle got tangled in some line, and I ended up pulling up a rig that was using a good sized rock as a sinker.

My first fish - on my first trip by myself after my dad passed - was a 3-4lbs Channel Catfish rigged very similarly to the plopper. It was a 3" or so rebel pop-r, one of his old ones in baby bass, but I had put a worm weight on the front to fish the bottom. People trash that setup but sometimes when nothing else works...try something insane ??

today's river find
pulled this up shortly before beginning a rather long battle with a 37 pound alligator gar, and just after releasing a 7.69 pound blue cat

The middle lure is a L & S Bass Master Lure, the metal bill is mangled.

I appreciate the testimonial for the rig, and that's a good story!

btw, I found a Rebel Pop-R rig on a similar rig this summer but in a different lake, hung up an underwater branch about a foot and a half below the surface, and I wondered about it too. Now I know they work!

Those wacky setups crack me up, but if there's one thing I've learned about fishing, it's that just about anything is possible. As long as there's a hook involved, you might catch one. I don't think I've ever caught one without a hook, but I might be forgetting.

I haven't been able to fish a ton this summer, but my highlight was trying to get a choppo out of a tree when a stand up paddleboarder came over and whacked it out for me. I didn't need it, I was mostly just bored from catching nothing, but a bank guy who looked down on his luck a bit came by and I have it to him and he was stoked. Flet better than catching a fish.

I've often found that sometimes it's the things you "shouldn't" do that work best on off days. I rig finesse plastics on 1/8oz chatterbaits and catch stuff like I did today:

Another good day on the water; here are the keepers I found today.

Anyone know what the first lure is?

It seemed very out of place 18' up and in an area of the lake that's only about 4' deep when the water's high.  It and the next one were tangled on the same branch.

Sparkle Tail - an old Indiana based crankbait originally made by Hubbard's that accounted for 2 of the first 3 state records here back in the 1960s. Color is rainbow trout, so it might be one of the newer versions of the bait which can still be had.

I just realized that in the pile of lures found yesterday, I found a Rebel Frog-R, a Rebel Crank-R, and a Rebel Pop-R.  What are the odds of that!

Another question since folks have been so great about answering questions ...

What's up with this lure I found a few weeks ago?  It's a G-Ratt Pistol Pete in green perch, a beautiful lure.  But this one has an orange streak on the head (I think it's a sticker, but it might be extremely precise and thick paint) and circular stickers that seem to be on it to protect it from the hooks.  Both are perfectly placed and adhered.  I don't see these features on lures online.  So is it a customized lure, an previous model year, a prototype ... ?
