WaterOtter Posted September 20, 2022 Posted September 20, 2022 When I saw the sinkers I thought one of two things had occurred: Either the guy fishing it didn't understand the concept of a buzzbait and kept wondering why his lure kept flopping around on top of the water, so he added sinkers to get it to down underwater behaving right ? or else he decided that what he really needed to connect with the big ones was a spinnerbait, but he didn't have one, so with a little improvisation he could get his buzzbait to do double duty. ? It's a silicone rubber skirt, although a little sparse, and the lure really does look great in these colors. Now I'm itching for the weekend so I can tie it on with the sinkers and see if it really will go underwater. The vortex those blades must generate! 1 Quote

WaterOtter Posted September 21, 2022 Posted September 21, 2022 I’m still trippin’ from Saturday. I paddled about 5½ miles according to google maps, and this time I didn’t find any good ones whatsoever until 3 miles into it (the revolver). Then, a tenth of a mile later I found the next 5 all within 200’. The two Hula Poppers were in thick matt 10’ from each other, and the XXL whopper plopper was floating 20' away, just outside the matt. That area of the lake, or someplace upwind, must have been really hopping around Labor Day. Most of them are big versions (130mm wp, which I haven't found in at least 3 years), 2-1/4" hp, XL KVD). Seems ironic because I had just been reading a debate in another thread over the merits of big lures vs small ones, and the big lure guys must have gotten out there and opened fire! Even the imitation hula popper rocks, with its thick, stiff rubber skirt that stands straight out. When I found the two hula poppers I had been thinking about how I’ve never found a cheap imitation hula popper but they must be on ebay, so it was hilarious when I actually found one! 5 1 Quote

Dude you should just start fishing for lures, you'd be like those dudes who rake in side income from collecting golf balls from golf course ponds ? 1 Quote

That Gantarel is a nice find. Out of all the lures I've found, I've never found a big swimbait. You'll find lures in groups like that due to prevailing wind directions during the warmer months near popular fishing areas. If there is a point that sticks out into the lake that is a known popular fishing area due to a heavy amount of cover (snags), and the wind typically blows from the south in the summer months, the banks to the north of that area will tend to be productive lure finding areas. Super User Bankbeater Posted September 25, 2022 Super User Posted September 25, 2022 Yesterday I found this Berkley Choppo stuck in the eel grass off of the end of a point. 2 Quote
Phishtank Posted September 27, 2022 Posted September 27, 2022 Found fishing the bank today for three hours. The jig heads were in a walmart bag surrounded by other trash at the beginning of the path. Left them there and came back after fishing. Kept the jig heads and disposed of the trash. 6 Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted September 27, 2022 Global Moderator Posted September 27, 2022 that’s a bad mamajama right there @Phishtank I probably already posted this same thing on this thread years ago, but I’ve got to somehow up my finding lures game. Yall find all kinds of cool stuff! I even have swim fins and goggles but all I find is ancient beer cans haha. I recently found two that you used to open with a little key thingy Quote
fin Posted September 27, 2022 Posted September 27, 2022 Yeah, that's a nice color on that jointed shad rap. What the heck is that white thing right above it? Quote

WaterOtter Posted September 27, 2022 Posted September 27, 2022 The white thing is a bleached out Scum Frog. I love saying scum fraawwwg ... The hooks and a small chunk of the back end are missing. Seeing one of those always reminds me of the guy in the muppet movie that Kermit asks what he does for a living, and he says "I keel fraawwwgs" Quote

Yeah, the big swimbaits are rare. I've only ever found this one, tangled in roots way under a bush (I had to lean way out and prop myself up to work it free), and last year a Pistol Pete about 1/2 mile from this one, waay up in a tree. I hope they're not from the same guy, because they're both very pricey ... And thanks for the tip about where they drift to, it is very reasonable. However, I look everywhere because a lot of the lures' locations are just so crazy they defy reason. My biggest tip is that a good find in any location keeps me looking there obsessively for months, no matter how logical or illogical. ? 2 Quote

I'm usually concentrated on fishing, but once I find one lure, then I can't stop looking everywhere. Anywhere, like you said, no matter how illogical. But those certain parts of any lake where floaters will end up, I can't ever pass those areas without having a quick look. 1 Quote
WaterOtter Posted September 28, 2022 Posted September 28, 2022 The river runt (or millsite wigwam, they're very similar) is an awesome find. I especially love finding vintage lures, and that one is in great shape! 1 Quote
WaterOtter Posted September 28, 2022 Posted September 28, 2022 In Alabama pop-ups were my mainstay because we had so much woody structure and stumps in the water, and bigger bass that could break the line. The key with pop-ups is to sweep for them often so you can get them fresh. In Michigan I spend more time in trees and bushes because I have kayak access to lakes with a lot of bank fishermen, and there don't seem to be many pop-ups (or maybe someone else gets those?) That's why that one trip was so trippy. ? 1 Quote
BassHRL119 Posted October 1, 2022 Posted October 1, 2022 I’ve been on a dry spell but I found this last week. Any ideas on the maker? Looks familiar but I can’t place it. 3 Quote
Super User AlabamaSpothunter Posted October 1, 2022 Super User Posted October 1, 2022 Wow karma got me for laughing so much in this thread. I'm going out today with a tree saw, and a big hook to try to recover lures I've lost in the last week. I've lost more baits in a week than I had previously all year. Somebody in this thread would hit the jackpot on what I've lost this week. So mad at myself, equally embarrassed. Had a big fish wrapped me around the same underwater wood that I've lost two Crankbaits and another chatterbait......I'm thinking I'm done fishing that area if I can't make some progess with a big hook and tree saw. There is something that catches the lures and wraps them, they aren't getting hooked. 1 Quote

Sad part is there's still a $15 Jackall, and a big fish swimming around with the same chatterbait setup as below when it wrapped me in this same mess. I keep throwing on it because I catch really nice fish on that piece of structure, but yesterday was the last time. I got $30 bucks back today, but that structure stills owes me another $25. Two of those baits have caught really big Bass, I'm superstitious so I couldn't rest until I at least tried. What I do is tie a bobber on the cut line so that it sits right below the surface, then come back with some tools. 2 1 Quote
WaterOtter Posted October 1, 2022 Posted October 1, 2022 Sweet score!! Heck ya your own lures count! even though it's like trading on insider information > Here's one of mine I left on a root 3ft down and found popped up 5 months later. This was a brand new H20 express on the day I lost it. Good data for how long lures can last in a lake. > I've tied on small bobbers I'd found for exactly that reason, but someone else always got to them first (or just took my bobbers) 3 Quote

After 5months that would have tickled me pink....I'm waiting to find a $20 Luckycraft that hopefully rusts out of cat's mouth, and then a nice Jackall to start floating in a similar place like yours above. I wish it didn't bother me so much to lose lures, but it drives me crazy. Quote

DaveT63 Posted October 17, 2022 Posted October 17, 2022 I was fishing a trap yesterday in a small pond when I snagged on something. When I pulled, it started giving way, so I pulled more. Pulled in this mess of line and decaying junk, as well as two traps! Chances are they are both mine, as I'm one of the few who fish this pond, but still! 3 3 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 17, 2022 Global Moderator Posted October 17, 2022 Leaves are getting off the trees, so I'm starting to find quite a few more baits. This weekend I found; 90 choppo Cotton Cordell Wally Diver Unknown medium diving crank H2O bluegill squarebill Strike King 300 Strike King 1.5 Bass Pro lipless 4 Quote
Tony Christian Posted October 17, 2022 Posted October 17, 2022 The bait monkey hides lures from me so I can keep spending, but my friend found a wpl 90 in munky butt that I can't seem to find at dick's anymore. 1 Quote
