I need Alternatives to the LC Pointer 100

Requirements:

4" (4 1/2" would be ok)

5/8 oz (or heavier)

2 hook ( not 3)

suspending jerkbait

I'm tired of losing $16 LC Pointers.  Need cheaper alternatives to consider.  Just ordered several Storm Twitch Stiks so I am aware of those.  I know about the Salmo Sting also.  Any others?

I don't know if you will find less expensive quality suspending baits equivalent to the Pointer. If you can handle half ounce, the Jackall Squad Minnow and Duo Realis 100 are nice and a few dollars cheaper.

Even if you find less expensive lures, you won't be any happier having those get bit off too. Start using steel leaders.

I gotta try, right?  I've heard that Twitch Stik is pretty darn good.  Lookin' forward to trying those.  Found some others that are lookin' pretty good too.

I'll be buying more Pointers just because I know what they are all about.  Great action, cast like a rocket, quality finish.  They are worth their cost but too spendy to feed the gators with.

The KVD jerkbait is very inexpensive (for a jerkbait) at about eight dollars, and had been a solid performer for me this fall although it is not as effective as the higher end baits.  But my all time favorite cheap jerkbait is the smithswick suspending rogue, it retails for only seven dollars.  Other good choices are the lightning pointer (it's labeled as slow-sinking but it's actually suspending) witch is a 7-8 foot diver with tight action, and the RCSTX knock-off of the vision 110.  Before I picked up a pointer minnow, vision 110, and kvd jerkbait this fall the only two jerkbaits I used was a doctored suspending rogue, and the lightning pointer for deeper fish in cold water.  Now if pick up the vision 110 the majority of the time followed by the pointer, and occasionally the kvd jerkbait or rogue.

Bottom line with jerkbaits is that you get what you pay for, and I love my rogue's, but my vision 110 and pointers are generally much more effective than the cheaper baits.

I lose many, many lures to pike.  Last week, I lost 15 swim bait heads in one trip.  I've tried using steel and heavy fluoro leaders, and I can say for sure that bass don't like them.  I fish gin clear waters, though.

The only solution I've found is to cover the area I want to fish with swim baits before I switch to jerk baits, because swim baits are cheap, and I don't care too much if I lose them.  I also sometimes troll HJ 12's, which pike love, through an area before throwing the expensive stuff.  The idea is to catch all the aggressive pike first.  I'd love to hear of a better idea.

If you aren't catching fish using leaders, you may be using leaders that are too heavy. With jerkbaits and even senkos, I make light leaders with 20lb test tieable wire. I've been using it for years. I still get plenty of bass and pike without loosing lures or fish.

Well Scott, I sure wish you'd come up here and catch all these d**n gators so they wouldn't bite at my stuff.  I have a spool of coated light wire under my bench.  Don't care for it on jerkbaits. 

Anyway, I think I've found what I need for now.

What do you cut that stuff with? I finally found cutters that will cleanly cut thin braid and I am very protective of them.  Will a pocket knife cut it easily?

Uh, since it's wire, I use wire cutters.

I use the "Wire cutter" portion on my fishing pliers.  Never tried a pocket knife.

Side cutters work well....plus as a bonus if you ever have to cut a hook out of some flesh (yours or a fish) side cutters are nice to have.

Don't sleep on the Baker JLD. It is a fantastic bait and the blue green flash has killed it for me. It is almost a Jackall Squad Minnow clone. Suspends well, cupped bill and swims nice on the straight retrieve.

I have the perfect jerkbait for you. The new Lucky Craft XR 98 Lightning pointer. $8.99. Same quality as the $16 ones. They dropped the price on them. Excellent jerkbait.

Storm Twitch stick in the 10 size and I have over 2 dozen now and I use it as an alternative to the Pointer 100. I too have lost many a Pointer 100 to toothy critters, aka Muskies, and when the twitch stick came out I gave it a shot and found it to be the best 5 buck jerkbait I ever used. First off the dimensions and bulk are incredible close to the pointer 100, it is 5/8oz and it has a nice erratic action, it is similar to a pointer, even the wobble on the pause. The best thing about it is the hooks, they use a VMC but unlike most others they use a heavier wire hook, the finishes are good too, not as nice as the Pointers but nice enough and it doesn't hurt as bad to lose one. I've done well with them, I like the pearl shad when there is some color to the water and the ghost wakasagi  and ghost pro blue are excellent in gin clear water.

Academy has a bait similar to a 110 style bait, listed as a floater, but it suspends. I have several and use them insituations where there's a good chance of losing them

You might try the Dynamic lures Travado or J Spec. I use the smaller HD Trout size which work well and catch just about everything - panfish, bass, pike and trout.

I'm partial to the glimmer trout color.
