Ditto on the RI Sweet Beavers...good colors and a great bait.  I also use RI Double Wide beavers to if I want to slow down the fall.

What's the difference between the two they look the same to me except the length

They really work in any and all conditions.

When I want a lot of action tie the bug

When I want some flair tie the bomb

When I want slick penetration with subtle movement tie the beaver

Any beaver style bait, they all seem to slip through vegetation really well.  Pit Bosses are probably my go to.

Pit boss is a solid, cheap bait for sure. I got packs of em for 2.50 one time at DSG.

I stumbled upon these a few months ago, and really like them.  It's a neat combo which adds a little bit to your typical punching plastics.  It has long tentacles which really flutter, but the bait itself is more "inline" verses appendages sticking out and catching grass as it goes through.  It works great and slips right through the thick stuff here on the Potomac.  Oh.....and they are on sale at 0.99.

I like a bait that gets through the canopy easily, but offers a slower fall without appendages that, although slow the fall, tend to catch the vegetation.  For that reason a creature tube like Big Bite Baits is what I reach for.  That, or just a big tube. There's not a lot of plastic to hinder a good hook set either.

Beavers are not creatures

 

Creatures are like brush hogs and anything with crazy appendages. 

 

Id say most creature baits will not be good punch baits due to lengthy appendages catching vegetation

Havoc Devil Spear, LFT Flapper, Missile Baits Missile Craw, Zoom Super Hog. Anything without a lot of appendages and generally a subtle action.

I like the Havoc Pit Boss. It replaced R.I. Sweet Beavers several years ago in my boat, for several reasons.

Some of the reasons, and in no particular order are:

When I am punching, I am usually using a larger tungsten sinker (3/4 oz- 1.5oz) and a 5/0 straight shank, heavy wire  VMC flipping hook. 
The thicker head of the pit boss holds up to punching about 1000 x's better than a R.I. Beaver. I am much more efficient when I can make punch after punch without having to readjust the bait every third flip.

They are also cheaper, and more durable in general, and I have not had any drop off in catch rate or quality of fish caught since the switch. What's not to like about that?

And they are more versatile for me............besides a pitch/flip/punch bait or a jig trailer, I also swim them, use them as a swim jig trailer, power shot them, c-rig them, drag them on biffle typw wobble heads, and even use them as a "finesse" buzzing frog on top.

For Punching which to me = getting the bait through the cover as easy as possible, no hang ups, & has the right fall rate & action. I like to seperate them into baits that glide, Swim, or have a paddle action if that makes sense.

First choice lately-Culprit Incredicraw, Incredipunch,Powerbait Lighting Bug, Thief, Gamber BB Cricket (John Crews used to dominate with this bait b4 missile paid him) 

Gambler Y-Not is one of the best as it glides & is better for hooksets than a tube which can be tricky. A Flipping Tube in Smoke/Red Flake is something I always try on a Trokar Tube Hook.

SK Baby Rodent, Rage Craw, Burner Craw, Zoom Ultravibe Speed craw, Z Craw, 3" Gambler Ugly Otter is fanastic, Larew Salt Craw, GYB Flappin Hog, Psycho Dad which hold a huge rattle from GYB or Kinami is really good.

Any bait is good, the Pit boss stays on the hook  much better imo than most other beaver baits, all the Rage Baits are really soft, work awesome but for Punching I find I get more use out of them in other areas, same with RI beavers, again, if over an OZ, not sure they can tell the difference between RI beaver or BPS Beaver. I just like the Rodent since it has always worked well so never found need to change.

I keep colors simple, Black/Blue,Okee Magic, Basically Darker colors, chart dye on tips, or any contrast of black/Green pumpkin. 

You can Punch anything if it gets through, many guys use Stick baits, they can get through most anything with lighter weight, then a bait like the Power Team Punch Bully weighs double than most baits so you can use less weight as well. Bait is a tank, Glides well, needs a big hook, I watched a guy land a 9lb Bass this year punching a Stanley Ribbit so sometimes thinking outside the box helps. If you hear bluegills popping, get the profile to match, then a swimming style beaver bait works well like the Pit boss...Hard to beat the Havoc Pit boss on price & for a flipping Craw the BPS Flipping Craws are a good alternative to the popular Larew & LC baits.

Missille Craw...Good call. I need to break those out again. I used to use them & do really well but somehow moved on, but they are nice & thin, get through the mats easy, Kind of John Crews first bait he used after the BB Cricket when he started with Missile. Devil Spear is just a great bait for any type fishing....

All good baits. Lake Fork Flipper is different looking & I actually like almost all the Lake Fork baits they are just hard to find & expensive but they make a bunch of good baits that fish do not see often unless you live in Texas probably.

The lake I fish has alot of lillies that form thick canopies thru most of the summer. Lots of good advice but my personal go to rig for punching is a watermelon red flake baby brush hog with a wide gap hook and 3/8 tungsten bullet weight with 30lb braid. Flip it in the holes and it falls pretty slow and most strikes occur on the initial fall. Secret tip: Dip the tail in chartruese garlic dye to give it flash as it falls you will get a lot of reaction bites.
