What rod to pair with my new reel???

I just purchased a Lews baitcaster in 6.4:1 and am wanting to throw stuff like crank baits, jerkbaits, spinnerbaits, chatter baits, buzz baits and the like. I am thinking along the lines of a Medium Fast.  Any suggestions? Thanks, and happy Thanksgiving.

I don't throw any of those on the same rod. Occasionally A med fast is a decent all around rod, but you will be making a lot of compromises trying to make it work for every one of those baits.

That a better choice. You might look at medium heavy moderate action depending on what weight baits you will be throwing. Most mediums are up to 5/8 oz baits while a medium heavy will cover p to 1 oz baits.

A medium/heavy, moderate/fast would probably be more versatile for those baits.  I use a klx 7' mh/mod-fast crank, rip, twitch rod for cranks, jerks, spinnerbaits, topwaters and chatterbaits.

If you're going to cover all those techniques with one rod, probably a MH/MF. I have this "big cranker" model Falcon.

But honestly, I use it for t-rigs because it's by far my most sensitive rod. Has a springy tip but is 80% backbone. The 7' is long enough for all medium to large cranks. I use 2 6-6 Lightning Rods for the baits you mentioned. I have one M and one MH to cover all those bases. I reason that these baits don't require extreme sensitivity so I can get by with a decent quality rod of the right action that's light enough to cast all day. They're quite old and some of the cork is coming off the fore grip but they're functional. When I replace them, I'll go with a better quality rod, but at the time I was getting over a divorce and was not flush with cash. There are plenty of rods between $40-$100 that will do a fine job for you.

if you can swing it, the G. Loomis E6X MBR843 is a great rod with a  really versatile taper and won't destroy your bank account.

I prefer a Fast action for most of those lures.  I used a MF for cranks before I got a crainkbait rod.  Worked ok.  Most Mediums seem to top out at 5/8 oz.  My Falcons at 1/2 oz.  I've got an HMG 7'2" Medium-Moderate Fast that is rated 3/8-1 oz. that might work.  Unfortunately for me mine hasn't seen much use yet so I can't give a definitive answer.

Falcon and Hammer rods in a fast action would probably be good choices.  Both have a nice parabolic bend yet are plenty strong enough to land any bass.

Most of us would cover this wide selection of baits with at least two rods. However we probably have 20 rods on the boat at any time so here are my best suggestions, it will do some of your tasks better than others but you should get away with it.

SECONDARY TECHNIQUES: Spinnerbaits / Squarebills

If you can use it for spinnerbaits it should work for chatterbaits and even some small to mid sized buzz baits.

i would say to look for a 7' to 7'3 medium or medium hey moderate or moderate fast action, i would stay away from fast if you are usig it for jerk baits and cranks

Take out the buzzbaits and the avid casting 66mf does a good job.  I like mine for jerkbaits and 1.5 squarebills.  smaller spunnerbaits 1/4  chatterbaits are good to.

a medium heavy mod-fast or medium fast  I would suggest a rod from the Powell inferno line those are great rods for the money or a *** *** Black would be a great choice also. Hope this helps!

Fishnkamp is on the right mark. Dobyn's recently launched its Fury series, it's a great line up for around $100. I can fish jerkbaits, buzzbaits spinnerbaits, and chatterbaits on the same rod (albeit I'd fish the latter two on a MH). I'd recommend the FR703 or the FR663 if you want a shorter rod.
