Alex Hoffman Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 Hey guys I am an Oregon bass fisherman and me and my buddy realize we need to throw the big baits to get the big bass. we are sick of losing $1000 dollars of lures though. I am fortunate to have a shop of tools (dad) bandsaw sanders drill press i just have NO knowledge on it. I wanna make lures like the roman made and all sorts of LARGE swimbaits for bass. I need some pushes in the right direction guys! I am most likely gonna start with bass wood and or Balsa but wehre can i buy good weights for it or joints all that good stuff.. also i have cut a rough prototype and its very hard to evenly sand the lure down to the fishy type shape. thanks guys! Super User A-Jay Posted November 21, 2016 Super User Posted November 21, 2016 Hello Alex and Welcome to Bass Resource ~ Can't help you much on your swimbait fabrication quest but Good Luck. Quick question though - Why are you losing $1000 of lures ? A-Jay 1 Quote
jr231 Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 You don't NEED large baits to catch large bass...you're just targeting large bass when you do so.. I caught my personal best on a 4inch popper and it was 24" and just over 8lbs.. there's a guy on here that caught a 12-13 lb bass on a 4inch senko. Also a 19lb bass was caught in California recently on a double tail hula grub on a football jig. all these are baits that a 1-2 lb bass could take easily. Good luck on your swimbait making though ! No doubt using them is fun.. 2 Quote
Alex Hoffman Posted November 21, 2016 Author Posted November 21, 2016 ive lost a ton of big swimbaits. line breaking snags and just hitting a dang rock on a cast. its easy when swimbaits i pay for average 100 a pop. yes i realize i can catch a double digit on anything, but with my location the key to the teeners are swimbaits here. thanks guys Quote

Super User MarkH024 Posted November 22, 2016 Super User Posted November 22, 2016 This is the 3rd of 4th forum you have asked for the golden platter of information about how to make swimbaits . No one is going to just hand you it, and I assure you the guys who make a lively hood out of making swimbaits aren't going to just throw the information out there either to the exposure of 100's of MILLIONS to read. Do some research, you have Google at your finger tips. Some information has already been passed over to you on other forums for hardware. You're not going to receive a step by step guide on how to do it. It's part of the process, figuring it all out. Best of luck on your journey. 5 Quote

Baitmaker Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 Check out the channel on YouTube called Solar Baits. His name is Mikko and his baits are top notch and then some. He shows how he goes about building a swim bait as well as other types of lures. Also tips on painting, foiling, making 3-D scales, etc. 1 Quote

If you are losing baits snagged deep, invest in a good lure retriever. Both a weighted knocker and a telescopic is not a bad idea. Worth it for saving just one expensive bait. Good luck on those wooden baits. Looks fun to build and will save a lot of money as you already have the tools. catching a PB on your own bait would be an awesome feeling! Quote
