Swim jig questions

Fished an old Limestone quarry yesterday.  Had really good results for this time of year.  To make a long story short . . . I took a couple of old jigs, did some trimming on them, and cut down some Keitech Crazy Flappers.  Made me sort of a swim jig.  Easily out fished my friend 3 to 1.  So . . . now I would like some info on swim jigs.  Is there a particular one you can recommend?  Colors, retrieve.  Just kinda fell into what I did.  Thanks for any info.

You can swim any jig the ideal head type doesn't exist. If where you fish has lots of aquatic vegetation a jig head that goes through it without getting fouled would be a good choice.

My favorite for coming through weeds has been the Lethal Weapon IV swimjig. They have a very pointy head and a light weed guard. Unfortunately that light weed guard makes them terrible around wood and you will pretty much hook any branch the jig so much as looks at.

For trailers i like the Rage Tail Menace, Structure Bug and Shellcracker.

SK "hack attack " heavy cover swim jig. I have luck with the rage tail menace as a trailer , but also the "DB rage craw" it has just a little less movement than the regular rage craw and a tighter body to keep the jig more compact. I also like using a soft paddle tail swimbait on the back. There's a bunch of brands so use one you like.

North Star Baits Original Swim Jig in 5/16oz is my goto swim jig for pretty much any situation. As for colors keep it simple, white, black and blue and a type of blue gill pattern(I personally like the New Gill color). As for trailers that is wide open, my personal preference is Reaction Innovations Skinny Dipper.  I will also use single tail, dual tail grubs, creature style baits, etc... There really is no wrong type of trailer.

Sometimes you will want a trailer that makes a lot of thump and sometimes you may want one that makes very little, sometimes you may want a really big trailer and other times you may want something small and compact. The fish will let you know,  For retrieve I will fish them a variety of different ways. I will fish them fast and slow and everything in between once again really is no wrong way to fish a swim jig.

Just have to experiment with them and find what works best for you because what works well for me may not work well for you...

i like pointy heads on swimjigs. grass jigs make versatile jigs for swimming and hopping/dragging/shaking when you are figuring out what the fish want at that particular time.

white, green pumpkin and bluegill colors are my favorite.

soft paddle tails on jigheads (no skirt) and bladed jigs (chatterbait) also make awesome swimjigs

There are many good swim Jigs on the market, Getting them custom done from a place like Siebert Jigs is great for Price, plus have it done any way you want. Plus you get to pick your Hook which matters most and he leaves the guards very long so you can cut them to how you like them. He has awesome colors & sells just the heads as well,has good deals on all related items.

I really like the Gambler Swim jigs, the Heavy cover is great for tough places, then I like the finesse Swim Jigs for lighter grass, line etc..then the flat head or pan head style for skipping.

Not sure what makes the Gambler swim Jig so effective at times, maybe the starflash skirts which have a different action & flash than Silicone or Rubber. Great prices, & SK is another who makes good retail Jigs. The Texas rig Jig/Swing jig I forget the names, but you have the bullet head, skirt, then weedless worm hook to texas rig trailers. 

Most jigs are good but some are not since they are not balanced right. I have had a few bad experiences with booyah & terminator swim Jigs, but I also like to swim grass jigs like you mentioned, and also the SK bitsy jigs which are good for tough days or smaller profile. 

Also, a Trailer is not always needed. I fish Swim jigs without trailers at times to get more hook ups & some days a good Jig does not need a trailer & will actually catch more fish. I know that sounds crazy, but I always try both. maybe it is profile, not sure, but a white jig right now without a trailer seems to be better some days then with a trailer some days. Hope that helps. Tackle Warehouse has a great section of swim Jigs. Flat heads skip better but ride higher, All Terrain has a decent flat head, Lunker City Pan head not sure about yet.

I use the Dirty Jigs Tackle Crappie Swim Jig with the 3X strong jig hook in 3/8 oz. 5/0 hook and 1/2 oz. 5/0 hook. The trailer that I use is the Zoom Swimmin Super Fluke Standard in the White Pearl Color..
