CrustyMono Posted November 18, 2016 Posted November 18, 2016 How can I add rivets to an aluminum boat. I will only doing this once, so cheap tools are fine if they will do the job well. Also i may add 5200 around them for added security thanks Quote
Crappiebasser Posted November 18, 2016 Posted November 18, 2016 Are you just asking how to replace existing leaking rivets or are you trying to rivet something to the hull? Quote

I want to rivet a metal angle to support the plywood casting deck. I am not worried about leaking rivets, because i will be coating the boat in truck bed liner. Quote
Crappiebasser Posted November 18, 2016 Posted November 18, 2016 Hitting the cup side with a pocket sledge while a buddy holds another sledge against the head always worked for me. Carriage bolts would be easier and still look like rivets though. 1 Quote

Super User Catt Posted November 18, 2016 Super User Posted November 18, 2016 Hitting are rivet with a hammer does nothing but flatten the rivet! You have to swell the shank in the hole! Weld it & be done! Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted November 18, 2016 Super User Posted November 18, 2016 If you're looking to add rivets to hold a support structure, I'd go buy a cheap riveting tool at harbor freight and some large pop rivets. Pretty cheap and if you're coating over them with truck bed liner anyway you won't have to worry about leaks. Otherwise bolts will work too. 1 Quote
Super User S Hovanec Posted November 18, 2016 Super User Posted November 18, 2016 When I remodeled my last 2 tins, I just used short 1/4" stainless bolts, flat washers and nylon lock nuts to attach things like that. There were no leaking issues either. Quote
frosty Posted November 19, 2016 Posted November 19, 2016 You can use bolts, some of these gasket washers may give you peace of mind Quote
