freelancer27 Posted November 16, 2016 Posted November 16, 2016 Hi all, once again I am looking for the great feedback from this community for an upcoming purchase! I am looking to get a Rod (that I would pair with a Daiwa Zillion SV TWS) that would be allocated for Spinnerbaits (up to 3/4oz) and smaller swimbaits (up to 1oz). I am planning to purchase the rod during the Black Friday period. My price range is up to 300 USD. Requirements for the rod; * Good casting (distance wise) * Light * Robust * good warranty Right now a candidate is the Orochi XX Casting Rod 7'2" Swingfire or Orochi XX Casting Rod 7'2" Diablo Spec R Would be great to get some suggestions here! THanks! Cheers! Quote
Logan S Posted November 16, 2016 Posted November 16, 2016 I'm a huge fan of the XX Spinnerbait Special (I have 2), it's true to it's name and is perfect for the task. I've thrown 3/4oz line-thru swimbaits on it as well and it handles them just fine. I also use it for squarebills and buzzbaits...There's not much it can't do. I'm sure the DSR would be great too, but I like a little bit of a shorter rod for spinnerbaits since I'm usually casting in/around/under stuff. Only downside to your plan is that MB products never go on sale, even for Black Friday . 1 Quote

How do you like the rods casting wise (I am looking for a rod that can do some distance). Also how is the weight? With what reels have you paired them? Thanks! Quote
rangerjockey Posted November 17, 2016 Posted November 17, 2016 I throw 3/4 oz. spinnerbaits and Paddletails on a Powell Max 3d 734. For me , it's about the perfect length and has a great tip for those baits. I think you could get away with a 1oz. swimbait head but that would top it out. 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted November 17, 2016 Super User Posted November 17, 2016 You can use a very wide variety of rod types with spinnerbaits from jig/worm MH fast to MH or H moderate crankbait rods. My general choice is to era on higher power rods, for example a rod rated for 1/4 to 1 oz, of average of 5/8 oz, I wouldn't use for 1 oz lures unless that is all I had with me. If 1 oz swimbaits ( most are 1 1/2+ oz) my rid choice would be close to 1 oz average or rating of 1/2 to 1 1/2 H moderate action rod. Since this rod would also work for spinnerbaits 1/2- 3/4 oz, that is where my search starts. What you find is frog rods fall into this category. Tom 1 Quote
freelancer27 Posted November 17, 2016 Author Posted November 17, 2016 Thanks. I probably tend more towards something to 1oz. The emphasis for the rod is to be light and that I can cast a good distance, the heavier the rod will, the less I will be able to do so with smaller lures (3/8oz spinnerbaits). Quote
Super User WRB Posted November 17, 2016 Super User Posted November 17, 2016 Take a look at the rods listed at TW under technique specific "frog rods". Irod Air series IRA754C is very light, similar to the gen II Freds Magic stick works OK for 1-1 1/2 oz swimbaits, lots of rods to choose from. Tom 1 Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted November 17, 2016 Super User Posted November 17, 2016 Sounds like you might like the St. Croix LTB 7'1" MH/F (Jig/baits) rod. It handles a 3/8 oz spinnerbait without a problem 3/4 oz football jig, and I'm sure it'd handle something up to an ounce the same. It's light at only 4.4 oz and has a lifetime warranty. It makes a great all around rod too. 1 Quote

Casting distance is fine for me, but I'm not usually looking for extra long distances when I fish spinnerbaits. Low rod angles and low trajectory casts are pretty normal when I fish both baits so the shorter rod is preferable. It's a lightweight rod, probably not the lightest rod out there but its definitely not heavy...Especially considering it's a MH powered rod. If extra long casting distance is your top priority I'd probably go with a longer rod, but the SS is excellent for most normal spinnerbait fishing - at least for me. I don't throw the swimbaits as much, but the same thing applies. 1 Quote
freelancer27 Posted November 17, 2016 Author Posted November 17, 2016 I am a taller guy, so a smaller rod is not that necessary at this point. Distance is important though, since some of the spots that I want/need to cast to are a bit further away from the bank than what I would like to. Right now I am leaning more towards the Orochi XX Casting Rod 7'11" Launcher or the Orochi XX Casting Rod 7'2" Diablo Spec R. The Diabolo Spec R. seems to be a very good all around rod, in case I want to go out just with a single rod.@Logan S May I ask what kind of line you have for the spinnerbait combos? Quote
