DoDFire Posted December 17, 2016 Posted December 17, 2016 More than welcome, I'm no expert but I got my set up with the medium light rod and that light braid dialed in for my style of fishing and it is smooth as silk and cast a country mile. One of the "micro" lines that I'm not real sure about is the Ardent Gliss, I have some spooled up but I don't like what I'm seeing so far. I know a bunch of folks trash the nanofil but for a finesse application like we are talking about it is excellent line. I've had it spooled for 2 years now and not the first issue with it. I have the Suffix nanobraid also and love this line as well. Gliss, is coming off in the next day or two, I just can't do it. My hair jig rods are the only braid I use, I can't get into any of it over 8#'s I just don't have the need for it where I fish and the way I fish. I have tried it but I am stubborn as well and didn't like it and I'd say we think alike.........If it works, why bother with change'n it. Quote

Got this guy on one of the small trout magnets. The pic in my AV is what the jig head looked like after. Broke my rod tip getting him out of the canal, but it was worth it to catch my first smallie in the middle of Washington DC. 2 Quote
RyanDR Posted December 26, 2016 Posted December 26, 2016 What ML rods does everybody use? I throw mainly 1/16-1/4 hair jigs and in the market for a ML rod. Right now I'm using a medium fenwick aetos rated 1/16-5/8 but I want something a little lighter in my arsenal for my hair jigs. Quote

The 7' is great for the Duo Realis Spin Bait 80 as well. Quote

I use the Avid X 7' ML-F. I was using a lot of different rods over the years, my favorite was a Quantum Super Light (Don't laugh, that rod was $230 when introduced) 6'6" Medium power, fast action spinning rod. That rod has a ton of sensitivity and a great action but on small 1/16oz hair with no trailer, my casts were just a little short so when I tried the Avid X in a 7'ML it was all she wrote, perfect for Ned rigs, hair jigs and other light line techniques. Maybe this is due to my stubborness as i use only mono, but I wanted to ask you what lines you use for these lighter jigs. Reason being, I tie jigs too and have many, but found that If im fishing with 6 or even lighter pound test mono the stretch offered kind of deters a good hookset.,. and 8 pound test with a light jig doesnt really cast for crap. I stuck with 6 pd test, and a super sharp hook, on a 7ft light action rod Do you use braid? flouro? when fishing these light jigs? I use 6lb mono exclusively for hair jigs and never had a problem. The thing is the light wire hooks that most hate work wonders when used with the right rod and line. I've been using Spider Wire Ultimate Mono the last few seasons, it is the best mono I've used in terms of knot strength, abrasion resistance, and low stretch. The down side is that it is very similar to fluorocarbon in that it will have a lot of memory if on a spool for a couple weeks. I give the spool a couple quick spritzes of KVD L&L right before I make my first cast and I'm good the rest of the day, but prior to that I used Berkley Trilene XL and Silver Thread AN40 and never had issues with setting a hook. TxBuddha Posted December 26, 2016 Posted December 26, 2016 Haven't fished hair jigs (yet) but you're right about never knowing what you'll catch on small baits. My PB bass 6 lbs +- was caught shooting docks for crappie on a 1/16 jig head and a Panfish Assassin. Put up quite a fight on my 5.5' dock shooting rod and a Shimano 1000 size reel. Between my buddies and I there have been a fair amount of big catfish caught crappie fishing as well. I've never gotten a really big one in the boat but I fish with a couple of guys that have boated 40 lb +, they have more patience than I do with something big on the line.... My "go to" vertical jigging rods are either 7' or 7'6" MLF Avids using 20# Sufix 832 with 8# or 10# fluoro leaders. They fish the lighter jigs great but have plenty of backbone for the "trash" fish that happen by. Quote
