Largemouth21 Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 I got some gulp alive crawlers in 4 inch for 4.95 on sale from 20.00 I got s great deal. I will be dropshotting for smallmouth and possibly walleye. What size mosquito hook should I use for the 4 inch crawler. Also what size hook to use for the 3 inch gulp minnow. Are 4 inch minnows good too for smallmouth or are they too big, if the 4 inch minnows are ok what size hook for them. I will be mixing gulp and gulp alive all together in this huge tub of "juice". Anyone have problems with that such as the gulps getting mushy or something? I've heard the jars leak terrible is a peanut butter jar or something similar ok for storage or do I have to buy one of those frabill bait holder things. What is the best way to store the unopened container. Probably In my closet is what I'm going to do. Quote
SWVABass Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 I've use the 3" minnows before. They catch pretty much everything and all sizes. I've use the #2 owner mosquito hook, but don't really like it. I've had them bend out and a couple actually break. I was fishing them on 10lb test, Abu "Ike" series drop shot rod. I went back to gamagatsu (sp) circle hooks, #2 as well. As far as mixing the baits and jars I cannot speak to that. I think the 4" minnows will work just fine as well, I've been drop shotting up to 6" baits with success for largemouth. Quote

Thanks, but aren't circle hooks for baitfishing for like catfish or something, or are you talking about gamakatsus mosquito dropshotting hooks. Quote
Bigchunk Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 I've landed some big hybrids on #2 owners mosquito hooks, never had a problem with them bending, match your line to hook and you will be fine Quote
CenCal fisher Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 I use hook sizes between #2 and 1/0 for drop shot. I'm not sure about the leaking jars but you could put a few in the peanut butter jar overnight so see if anything bad happens though I really doubt anything will happen. Quote
Smallmouthcanuck Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 I store gulp in gasketted spill proof containers from grocery store square in shape with a lock tab on each side and lock together when stacked sort by size mixed colours no long term effects colours do not bleed or mix even allowing to freeze over winter in unheated garage it gets cold in Canada will not freeze solid turns to slush unsubmerged gulp ie tail out of slush will become less pliable but still usable liquid colour will darken and improve I believe evaporation makes it stronger smell small worms and leaches are my favourite up here for smallmouth and incidental wallie for supper Quote

SWVABass Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 Here is a link to what I like to use. Might not work for everyone but they work great for me. http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Gamakatsu_Octopus_Circle_Hook_Offset_Point/descpage-GOHOP.html Quote
William Rossi Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 I use these #1. Strong, sharp and fish dont seem to get off as easy. http://www.ebay.com/itm/121981646918?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT Quote
blckshirt98 Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 #2 is my most common size for largemouth. Don't know anything about walleye but I'll use a larger hook if the bait has a thicker nose (like a fluke). The Owner mosquitos are the best hooks for dropshotting IMO Quote
