Ned Rig. Mono vs. Fluoro

I recently started fishing the Ned rig and it gets bites like crazy, more than just about any other technique, albeit often for smaller sized fish. I have been fishing it on 6 pound mono. Was wondering if I would lose performance by switching to fluoro, perhaps making it sink too fast and not get the same type of enticing fall which is where most of the hits occur. I know some have said they prefer mono for the Ned Rig, but I've seen fluoro work well on it.

Do yourself a huge favor and switch to a light braid or other similar type line (Gliss is my personal favorite). Just use a short leader of mono or flouro for the abrasion resistance and you'll be fine. It improves most every aspect of the technique from castability, bite detection, hookup ratio, line twist, and fish landed.

I agree with Bluebasser, I'm not a fan of braid but for the ned it works great. I use 10lb. to a 6lb. leader.

+3 for braid with a leader.  I use Berkley Nanofil with P-line fluorocarbon leader.

I prefer mono. 6lb CXX works well for me. Light braid catches the wind too much.

Ned is not a small fish lure, it is an all fish lure.  Since there are more small fish than big fish, you'll get more small fish.  But if there is a big fish there, it will bite.

Like every one else said, go with light braid and a mono or fluorocarbon leader.  Any pound test braid will work, as long as it's no more than ten pound test, but I prefer six pound for the extra casting distance.  Use a short leader of 6-8 pound mono or flouro for abrasion resistance.

My favorite combination for my finesse spinning arrangement is Berkley Original FireLine braid  in 14 pound test. That is the diameter of most 6 pound monos. The stuff plays terrific on a spinning reel. To that I attach a 4 foot leader of P Line CXX in 10 pound test. The stuff is super tough and works great. You could also drop down to 8 pound Halo instead.  This is the exact combination my guide on Dale Hollow had my wife and I use during our week of vacation, back in April. We lived and died with that little bait because we caught the big females hanging out in big grass flats several days post spawn. They were in terribly foul moods and would not eat anything!!  We fished the 1/10 ounce shroomz heads and the california craw bodies. The big smallies were located back on main lake deep grass flats say 10 to 20 fow.  Every smallie we caught was at least 4 pounds any many weighed over 6. I would agree it is a big fish bait. I look at it like you just finished the big Thanksgiving turkey dinner and you feel bloated, but if someone offers you a dinner mint or a Hershey Chocolate Kiss, YOU WILL EAT IT ANY WAY!!!

I use 15lb braid,  no leader. I fish stained water though. I just started Texas rigging my ned rig because I fish a lot of weeds. I use a 1/16 oz bullet weight and a 1/0 gamakatsu ewg hook.

Thanks for the tips. I don't doubt the Ned Rig catches bigger fish too. It's probably mostly a product of the fishery I use it in, where the average fish weighs 1 to 2.5 pounds with a few 3 to 4 pounders and very occasionally a 5 plus.

What brand of braid and pound test do you guys run with this setup?  I currently run 8lb flouro but might switch to a braid after reading this.
