I know that 17 pound test fluorocarbon is best in this situation, but I am headed to a local lake this weekend and don't have time or money to get flouro to use. I will be targeting brush piles in creeks. the water was satined there last time, but clear in the main lake. I currently have 30 pound braid on my jig rod. it is a 7'3" MH Fast. I was wondering if i should stick with that, 15 pound mono, or 10 pound cxx. Thanks.

30 # braid is all I use for jigs. Gives me the best feel plus strength. I can't stand fluro

No reason to use a leader on 30 lb braid fishing cover in off color water. The fact is no reason to use a leader period.

Berkley Trilene Big Game 14 lb test or PLine CXX 12, you can uproot one of them trees with either. Since when ? Since 1980. 17 lb FC is not "best".

First sentence I get.  Second sentence are you saying there is no situation with a jig where a leader is beneficial?

I'm not arguing what you're saying, I'm just looking for clarification.

I never use a leader with braid!

Do I think bass can see my line?

Yes

But I don't think they know what it is!

As for original question, why change?

Lake Chabot in NorCal is a clear water trout lake with excellent depth of light and visibility, the type of water where FC line is considered essential. Consider this fact; a 19 lb FLMB was caught on a sunny day Oct 28 2016, a few weeks ago at Chabot and the angler used 65 lb braid tied directly to 3/4 oz jig with GYCB black w/blue flake Hula grub fishing a deep submerged tree.

i think what Tom is saying is that flipping jigs in cover (wood , brush , laydowns , etc.), you are triggering reaction bites hence you not gonna need the sensitivity of flouro for light bites you'd get dragging a jig on the bottom . for me , i would use a leader if not straight flouro , i use 14 or 16 lb. Metan Green Shooter .

I have several jig rods all with different lines from 12lb fluorocarbon to 65lb braid and lots of in between. My main jig rods has 20lb Seaguar Flippin fluoro and 50lb Seaguar Flippin braid.

I grew up fishing straight Dacron braid before mono became readily available back in the 50's. Back then we didn't have soft plastics, lures were plugs, jigs and spoons mostly what is called reaction lures. Braid diesn't affect the faster moving lures action because today's braid is very small in diameter. Braid doesn't affect a jigs action or soft plastic worms and bass are rarely line shy fish.

I agree adding a leader aides in breaking off snagged lures when using 40 to 80 lb braid and it helps to reduce line twist using spinning reels. The question is how does adding a FC leader help? FC has a weakened knot joint 2 places used as a leader, almost impossible to get 100% knot strength with FC line. So in my opinion adding a leader is a confidence issue that bass can't see the line and is debatable but real in the minds eye for those who believe it.

WRB and Catt - from your experience fishing 30lb braid without a leader, do think that using green instead of hi vis yellow braided line makes any difference at all? Thank you.

I don't go smaller than 45# braid, I don't find braid hard to see.

The only reason I'll use any other color than green is in winter when the water color on Toledo Bend is off colored, not muddy but clear water that has color. These conditions make green hard to see so I throw amber Big Game.

Here is my two cents. I use a lot of braid with a leader made of 10 pound P Line CXX copoly, about 4 foot long. I do not think it is that necessary in stained water, but I do it more because i am confident that line will break around 22 pounds, If I need to break off I can still do it and not loose a lot of expensive braid. I fish off color tidal water here at home, clear rivers around here as well, and then I go to Tennessee/ Kentucky and fish those super deep, clear. big impoundment lakes (like 60 miles long) like Dale Hollow and Center Hill. I do not like changing my gear around for every different situation.

It might not be ideal, but I would still do it this way and am successful. For a single trip I would try a leader of P line or even Trilene XT if you have some.  Try something like 14 or 17 pound XT, which is always available at Walmart. If you fish it and you are having trouble cut the leader off and fish it tied direct. See if it makes a difference I doubt it will.

Never used yellow only Fins 60 lb PRT and XS in green. My night fishing partner uses Fins yellow WindTamer and loves it, haven't tried it yet but plan to try it.

I don't use braid for jig fishing unless it's in heavy cover, I prefer Sunline Super green Sniper in 10, 12 & 14 lb depending on the time of seasonal periods, water clarity and depth I am fishing.

I like 15 or 17 or 20 lb Abrazx for jig/soft plastic/ jika rig fishing.

Exact line and lbs I use, with 40 lb braid thrown into the mix.
