Hi BR,

I am from Toronto Canada and our fall fishing is coming to an end. But it is also a great time to grab discounted gear and upgrade arsenal. I am a huge Loomis fan and I was wondering which Loomis rod would be best for spinner bait and top water. I am most likely looking in the IMX/GLX line. Keep in mind I think I am leaning towards a 6'8 Medium Fast action rod, let me know what your thoughts are!

what size topwater and spinnerbaits? go with GLX over IMX.

I love my old MBR 783 for 3/8 and 1/2oz spinnerbaits. Its a different animal from the 843. Not sure if the 2016 783 GLX MBR is similar.

I am currently using an E6X MBR843 (or at least was in the summer) for 3/8 and 1/2oz size spinner baits and really liked it. Using it with a Curado  200i PG. great set up.  I too am from the GTA and I got mine at JB's Fishing Depot near the airport.

its not a GLX or IMX but its one great rod from Loomis. Just an Idea.

How about the sbr812 o813 spinnerbait rod?  It is weighs less cost less then the others?  This was my first loomis rod and still one of my most favorite rods.  I have also used it for worms and jigs?  I  own a couple of glx,s and a nrx and this rod would be my first choice for that application?  Just a point to ponder?

The IMX SBR812C or 813C would be my first choice.

I prefer the MHF for spinnerbaits.

This is an easy one.   The GLX MBR 783 is the best spinnerbait rod I have used.  I've tried the SBR 812, SBR 813, IMX MBR 783, GLX BCR 803, and the NRX MBR 843.  The SBR were good, but I throw spinnerbaits that go from 1/4 oz up to 3/4 oz. and I didn't like having to carry two rods to cover all my spinnerbait needs.  Also, the IMX MBR 783 had a slightly different action than the GLX MBR 783, which is why I didn't like the IMX, but loved the GLX.  That subtle different action between the two made all the difference when it came to fishing spinnerbaits.

Thanks for the input all. I actually narrowed down to GLX 782CMBR or GLX 783CMBR. But most of the forums I read most people use a medium. Please advise?

I would strongly advise against the old MBR 782 glx if you will be throwing spinnerbaits. it is very soft and it is nothing like the 842 glx, almost a power less IMO. not sure about the 2016 version however.

I use the 782 for small topwaters, jerkbaits and small cranks.

I had the GLX MBR 782 and ended up selling it.  If you plan on throwing only say 1/4 oz spinnerbaits, it will work, but even then it lacks that juice to rip that spinnerbait through lillypads or weeds (which is where I like to throw my spinnerbaits).  The GLX MBR 783 has a nice tip to really toss a wide range of weighted spinnerbaits into tight spots and has that extra backbone to rip the spinnerbait through cover along with ripping that fish out you just triggered into striking your lure just after ripping it clear of weeds.

Since you are looking to throw both spinnerbaits and topwaters I would go with the mbr782

Agree with bigfruits and LC man. Have used both the GLX MBR 782 and 783 extensively. Still own the 783 as my dedicated shorter range spinnerbait stick and it SHINES for this technique from 1/4 - 1/2oz. Anything over 1/4oz is too much for the 782.
