jr231 Posted November 4, 2016 Posted November 4, 2016 I use straight 15lb braid for jerkbaits. And have never once casted a lure off with it. I think your knot is in question.. I second whomever mentioned the spinning rod. 2 Quote

If you go back & read his original post he said the braid got caught around a guide in mid cast & the bait broke off. 2 Quote
jr231 Posted November 4, 2016 Posted November 4, 2016 I've been using braid for years and have never had this happen. I don't think the braid is to blame. 1 Quote

I don't think the braid is to blame. I still use braid for the vast majority of techniques, but I don't use it for big swim baits or average sized jerkbaits anymore mostly because of how expensive they are to lose. The inertia of a big swimbait or a long casting jerkbait seems to make it more likely to brake off when the cast is suddenly halted, and no stretch braid doesn't have the cushion to absorb the shock. In addition to that braid seems to be more prone to getting wrapped around guides and such in the first place, because of its limpness. 1 Quote
jr231 Posted November 4, 2016 Posted November 4, 2016 I like the sensitivity of braid.. and the added casting distance I get with it when using spinning reels. I feel braid is the strongest of all lines I've ever tried and I enjoy the thin diameter of 15lb test braid. This happening was operator error.. possibly the reel. Not the line I'm positive. 1 Quote

I fish my jerkbaits with 8lb sniper generally, but if I'm losing to you in the boat, I may risk it with 6lb. 1 Quote

The line wrapped around the rod tip causing the cast off is my understanding. I don't know anyone who hasn't had their line wrap around their rod tip without them knowing and stop their next cast from ever happening. I use 10 pound Big Game on all 3 of my casting jerkbait rods and 8lb on my spinning jerkbait rod. 1 Quote

Ok I never said that I've never had my line tangle around the rod tip. i said I've never casted off a jerkbait because of it and I almost exclusively use braid . Sometimes with a floro leader for weightless plastics but that's irrelevant. For jerkbaits I use just braid. And have never had this happen. I've used braid at 4, 6, 8, 10, 15, 20, 30 and 60. I mainly use 10-15 for bass fishing. Depends on what im doin Ill vary line weight. It's always hard for me to get my lure to come off my line with a good Palomar knot. If line does wrap around my pole and I cast, it usually just gets more tangled and I have a quick scare that I damaged a guide. But usually all is well because 80 % of the time you can pull on any knot with braid and it slips back to itself. And it's back to fishin 1 Quote

I've had it happen, it sucks. One of the main reasons most swimbait guys don't use braid. 1 Quote

Can't say I've ever known anyone who has used it. For me it's been good old Trilene XL for a very long time. It just seems to be limp enough to handle the cold temps usually involved with jerk bait fishing season and have the perfect amount of stretch to work the bait right. I've tried it in higher pound tests and see no redeeming value for it. 1 Quote

Also since it's very limp it has a tendency to tangle in the hooks. I'm a huge fan of braid but I know there's a time and place for it. My topwater/jerkbait/crankbait rod does not have it. With jerks and topwaters it's a problem for me. If I was only cranking with that rod it would have braid on it. I use a slightly more powerful rod for squarebills and I throw them with braid. 2 Quote

Loose loops on a spinning reel is the enemy of braid users. Jerk bait fishing is notorious for creating those loops, in my experience. I use braid and spinning gear for light cranks, but not jerks. 1 Quote
jr231 Posted November 5, 2016 Posted November 5, 2016 I'm not in a position to have a bunch of rods and such. I've been using braid for cranks and jerkbaits for just shy of a decade . You all have your prefernces of what you think is best and why you think so.. I'm happy for you. 1 Quote

Super User Master Bait'r Posted November 6, 2016 Super User Posted November 6, 2016 8# CXX. Very little stretch and super strong. Also really cheap. By far my favorite jerkbait line, I couldn't handle how stretchy the Yo-Zuri was. 1 Quote
