Jerkbait Line

Last week I casted a vision 110 off because the braid got tangled around an eye mid-cast, and after that I decided that I was not going to risk casting another expensive jerkbait off by using limp braid.  Now i'm trying to decide weather to spool my jerkbait rod up with 6# vanish fluorocarbon, 8# iron silk (i'm leaning toward this since it has so little memory and less stretch than regular mono, but I'm not sure if the fact that it's very visible almost like braid would matter with jerkbaits), #6 ultimate mono, 8# big game mono, or 10# big game mono.  Which one of the lines I mentioned would you guys suggest using for jerkbaits, mainly the Vision 110?

8 lb. Sunline Sniper. i like flouro cause mono and braid  tends to lift the lures nose a bit making it rise in the water column when you twitch it after a pause .

10lb mono for most cases.

8lb mono in clearer water

12lb mono if water is stained enough .

Big Game 10-12 or try Ande 10-12 stays a little more limp than Big Game. I like both .

I've never tried Iron Silk so I can't comment on it. Can't say I've ever known anyone who has used it. For me it's been good old Trilene XL for a very long time. It just seems to be limp enough to handle the cold temps usually involved with jerk bait fishing season and have the perfect amount of stretch to work the bait right.

You are at risk with 6 pound test anything, but certainly with Vanish.  Your lure will vanish.

The water here in the Ozarks can get pretty darn clear in the winter and I've yet to need 6lb to get bit on a jerk bait. I'm not saying I will never see the day when 6lb would be necessary but 6lb is below my comfort level for jerk baits. 8lb is as low as I will go, and I'm not real comfortable with that.

Thanks for all of the reply's!  I went with eight pound mono and spooled it up in my jerkbait rod this morning, and tried it out this afternoon for a couple hours.  Ended up with 27 bass and 9 big white bass on the vision 110 and pointer 78, and I decided that i am definitely am going to stick with the eight pound mono.

6lb is low when you factor in today's diameters with everyone fishing Japanese lines.  I fish my jerkbaits with 8lb sniper generally, but if I'm losing to you in the boat, I may risk it with 6lb.

If the 8# mono was the Big Game you mentioned, you should be set. That is pretty much the same as many 10# monos, which is what I consider standard around here for most regular sized jerkbaits. I will throw a lot of 8# fluoro though when dealing with totally open water situations, especially if the water is a bit to the clearer side.

Yep, it's the big game.  I wasn't planning on risking my vison around docks or anything anyways, I use my topwater rod or ned rig rod for fishing closer to the shoreline and docks with other jerks other than the vision 110, and those rods I have ten pound on.

What's youtr go-to jerkbait in the ozarks? Grew up fishong a bass club there, and seems like they generally want something different than a rolling Rouge up there.

Vision 110, LC Pointer, Spro McStick and, as you said, Smithwick Rouge. All are usually tied on most of the time. The 110 usually ends up seeing the most use and the McStick probably the least. In water below 40 degrees the Pointer seems to out perform the rest.

Do what KVD does : Two ft. leader of #20 lb. Big Game mono at the end of #20 to #30 lb. braid .

I used to use braid with a leader for all jerkbaits (although not that heavy, I think it would hurt the action with line so heavy) until I lost one because the limp braid tangled around an eye, which is why I asked the question.

I have always had issues with braid wrapping around the hooks while using jerkbaits. 

And I certainly wouldn't recommend 6# ever for casting gear. 

Personally, I use 10 or 12# Sniper FC.

I actually use jerkbaits on spinning gear for whatever reason, it just feels easier for me to give snappy jerks with spinning than with casting gear.

 I've been using 10 pound test green stren since the 80's for a jerkbait.,..works for me!,..why break it?

 I will add,..I use big game alot in saltwater,..
