blckshirt98 Posted November 1, 2016 Posted November 1, 2016 You can always buy packets of desiccant in bulk and put them in any of your tackle boxes to help with moisture/rust, especially if they charge more for the Zerust feature. 2 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted November 1, 2016 Super User Posted November 1, 2016 Waterproof boxes are great at trapping moisture and promoting rust. The only thing they're good for is keeping something dry that you'll never or rarely have to open up, but will be exposed to water. For baits, air flow is important to avoid rust. The best are the perforated boxes from Plano. 5 Quote

KDW96 Posted November 2, 2016 Posted November 2, 2016 Be carefull when pulling hydroflow boxes out of your bag,box or boat storage. The hooks will have a tendancy to work their way through the holes. And youll get stung ! You dont need 500 holes to prevent rust. I use the plano waterproof, because of the latches and thicker plastic. Drill 2 holes, 3/16 drill bit in the lid, about half in apart, above each compartment. Put 1 hole in each compartment around the outside of the box, about 3/4 up from the bottom. Ive been using the same box for most 3yrs, and have had no rust. Took about 10 minutes 1 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted November 2, 2016 Super User Posted November 2, 2016 If you want nice, clean holes, use a soldering iron with a fine tip. Do it outside, or somewhere well ventilated. Quote

corn-on-the-rob Posted November 2, 2016 Posted November 2, 2016 I reserve the waterproof boxes for any soft plastics that I like in a 3700 box, you can safely add attractant with out it leaking. That being said, the 3 latches on the waterproof boxes are a bit incommodious and take more time and effort every time you have to get in/out of the box. I bought about 6 of the Plano waterproof boxes and I had read a few reviews before buying that mentioned the latches breaking off, but decided to proceed anyways. Within one season of gentle/proper/moderate use 2 of my 5 boxes are now not water-tight due to latches shattering. The plastic they use is a bit too weak to withstand the cycles of moderate/heavy use, especially for the tension they are subject to. Other brands, I have not had experience with yet but the concept is a good one. 1 Quote

Yup. This is exactly what I do and it works like a charm. Quote
Super User WRB Posted November 2, 2016 Super User Posted November 2, 2016 Unless you live where the humidity is high the standard 3700 boxes work great, they aren't air tight and never had any rust issues and used them for decades. Today's fresh water hooks are plated to prevent rusting unless you fish salt water, then rise off with fresh water and let dry before boxing the lures or hooks. Tom Quote
Super User J Francho Posted November 2, 2016 Super User Posted November 2, 2016 I've always had rust issues, for decades, until I switched to holy boxes. Seriously. I can't believe people say they never get rust... 2 Quote
riverbasser Posted November 2, 2016 Posted November 2, 2016 When im out fishing any baits that I change get tossed in the corner of my storage compartment. I only put them back in the plano boxes at the end of the day or even the next day so they are totally dry then. I don't really do this for rust more of just laziness while on the water but it works 1 Quote

I can't believe people say they never get rust... We rarely get rain and the humidity is less than 30% most of the time. I have over 30 original style Plano boxes that are at least 20 years old without holes or seals and have zero issues with rust. Salt water off shore fishing is another story and very careful not to put away anything that is wet, hooks, reels, rods etc, without rinsing in fresh water, spraying with WD-40 and drying. Air flow is key factor in corrosion prevention along with keeping alkaline (salt) and acid (fuel fumes) away from untreated or unplated metals. The holes need to be big enough to drain liquids, about 3/32" to 1/8" diameter for box lids or lids that don't seal out air. Tom Quote
Super User J Francho Posted November 2, 2016 Super User Posted November 2, 2016 It can get pretty humid here. All I have t do is leave a lure in a box for a month, and there will be rust. It's a guarantee. The Airflow boxes or just putting holes in with a soldering iron COMPLETELY solved the issue better than any other suggestion in this thread. Quote
