Scarborough817 Posted October 31, 2016 Posted October 31, 2016 rod builders i have a question is there anyway to tell if my blank goes all the way down to the butt of the handle? i was considering sanding won some of the cork (i know huge mess) on one of my rods and i understand it will be more tip heavy but i was just wondering if it is possible Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted October 31, 2016 Super User Posted October 31, 2016 I've never seen any modern rod that doesn't have the blank going clear to the butt of the rod... 3 Quote

Super User fishnkamp Posted October 31, 2016 Super User Posted October 31, 2016 Which rod model is it? Is it one of the ones that you can add weight to the butt to adjust for balance. I assume it has their humpy style rear grips. You could find a custom rod builder. He can remove and replace the entire grip and reel seat and install whatever you want so it is exactly the way you want it. I just did this to a couple of G Loomis rods. I broke one and the replacement had a plastic reel seat, hood and locking rinds. The reel kept loosening up. It is sad the garbage G Loomis is using since Shimano bought into them. Anyway we chose a nice American Tackle comfort grip, and went with a set of Winn split grips. The rod is lighter, and much more comfortable. I liked it so much I had my other rod done the same way. It cost me around $40 per rod. Sadly I had to do it to a brand newIMX rod that retails around $250. Quote
KP Duty Posted October 31, 2016 Posted October 31, 2016 Kudos to you for mentioning rebuilding a bass pro rod. They skate on the components Ike 13 does, but I've felt some pretty good graphite from them. Quote
yosef Posted March 17, 2017 Posted March 17, 2017 Just stick a needle in the cork and see if it hits the blank or keeps going 2 Quote
Super User S Hovanec Posted March 18, 2017 Super User Posted March 18, 2017 Also, make sure it's actually all cork before you start sanding. I've done more than a few repairs that were cork veneer over foam. Looks pretty good. Had me fooled til I put it on the lathe and run a razor blade through it! 1 Quote
Lyman X Posted March 18, 2017 Posted March 18, 2017 Could you give the rod model and some specs, approx. age and is it an XPS powerhump handle. Does the buttcap screw off in order to use an XPS weight kit? I have 3 of these from the original Rick Clunn sig. series and the blanks are great, they came with all Fuji Sic guides, and I am in the process of rebuilding all 3. The cork is some of the worst I've ever seen, but otherwise they're very well made rods. I managed to shave 1.5 oz. off the one I've completed so far. I've seen nothing so far to indicate that the blank wouldn't be all the way through. Mine have exposed blank reelseats so that's a pretty good sign. Forgot to say mine are casting rods. Quote
Lyman X Posted March 22, 2017 Posted March 22, 2017 Makes me wish I'd read the date on original post before I typed all the crap above! 2 Quote

Learn something new every day:) They do one better too. Cork pattern printed on paper wrapped over a low density particle board type material (not burl cork). It does fall apart once it gets too wet. 1 Quote

Wow, I haven't had that misfortune, but I can definitely see and feel a difference in the cork between a $30 rod and a $100 rod. Quote
Super User webertime Posted April 24, 2017 Super User Posted April 24, 2017 Aren't Veritas all 2 piece rods. the blank and the handle are spliced together about 6" above the lock nut? Quote
