Ski213 Posted October 27, 2016 Posted October 27, 2016 Depends on the conditions on the given day but generally a blade bait like a silver buddy in the dead of winter. 1 Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted October 27, 2016 Super User Posted October 27, 2016 Old stand by winter baits: 1. Jerkbait - clear water to light stain, 2' visibility minimum. 2. Flat sided crankbait - size depending on water temp. 3. Hair jig - size and type depending on water temp and clarity. 4. Spade tail grub - I like the 3" Mann's Stingray Grub, excellent for dead sticking and slow crawling. Newer baits that are doing well in winter: 1. Fish Head Spin or Under Spin - I've had success in both clear and stained water. 2. Soft plastic swimbait - 3" to 4" max rigged on fish head spin or a jig head. 1 Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted October 27, 2016 Super User Posted October 27, 2016 Sassy Shad, jig and trailer, and a jerkbait. 2 Quote

When you mention flat sided crank baits wich ones do you normally use? Quote
Cody21w Posted October 27, 2016 Posted October 27, 2016 Lipless crank. Jigs. Jerkbaits sometimes. Huddlestons super slow on the bottom. Jigging spoons. Quote

I like the #5 and #7 Rapala Shad Rap, but the #5 is being replaced by the #5 Bagley Balsa Shad, almost identical in size but the Bagley weighs 3/8oz and runs almost a foot deeper, the weight is the main thing as I can fish it on a casting set up. I also like the Rapala DT Flat 7 and the Bandit Flat Maxx. 1 Quote

Being one of those guys, my favorites are shad raps, jerkbaits, Silver Buddy style blade baits, and fish head spins. 1 Quote
Oklahoma Mike Posted October 27, 2016 Posted October 27, 2016 Jerkbaits, jigs, and senkos are my main baits in colder weather. Sometimes a spinnerbait slow rolled at a snail's pace. Quote

Super User iceintheveins Posted November 8, 2016 Super User Posted November 8, 2016 Here in Colorado in most places our lakes are frozen from mid December to Mid March. Higher elevation lakes can freeze earlier and remain safe for ice fishing till early April. But at ice out or just before ice up, I have done best on jerkbaits, yo yoing lipless cranks, swim jigs fished slow, jigs with a subtle trailer like a Zoom Super Chunk Or Culprit DW2 chunk, the Ned Rig, drop shotting, and carolina rigged centipedes.
