Some tissues Posted October 26, 2016 Posted October 26, 2016 I have been doing this for quite some time now most think I'm crazy when I tell them what I'm using on the water. I like to use a ul with a 500fd shimano 2pld nanofill with a 2pld mono leader then I tie on a 100th oz jig with an impulse mayfly. I have seemed to slay panfish with his technique cuz of the super slow fall and tiny presentation even with the small casting distance. 2 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 29, 2016 Global Moderator Posted October 29, 2016 I catch hundreds of green sunfish for flathead bait every year with a 1/80oz jighead and a piece of a orange 2" grub. It cast pretty well on very light gear and the bright orange is easy for me and them to see so I know when to set the hook. 2 Quote

Red Bear Posted November 2, 2016 Posted November 2, 2016 the leader is probably not necessary, bluegill will actually attack line(even FC which is supposed to be invisible underwater) and pretty much anything else that moves... the last couple years ive been throwing trout magnets for bluegill and panfish, slays them... 2 Quote
Outdoor Zack Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 I started fly-fishing for panfish this summer. Small weighted (beadhead) wooly-buggers, "fluff butt," or other flies are easy to cast and still fall pretty slowly. Small spider flies are good too. I've had some great days (50+ panfish in an afternoon, easy) with these techniques 2 Quote
Red Bear Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 another bait i got a lot of bites on but had a poor hookup ratio was these real tiny hellgrammite baits with hooks already inserted into them. nearly impossible to cast too. i just couldnt get a hookset with them, but the panfish were tearing it up bite wise... davecon Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 When the beetle spins quit working I might try these techniques, but for right now the beetle spins work just fine. 1 Quote

The leader is more so that My line last longer and if I get hung up in rip rap I can just pop it easily without risking too much line loss if it snaps 1 Quote

Interesting technique,I might give it a try when I am targeting bluegill.I have had success using small crappie jigs, beetle spins, and bread balls for bluegill fishing. Quote

Cool tell me how it works for you though be wary of the easy line twists with the small reels, light line and light lure. I was thinking of go to more of a 80oz this spring Quote

Do they sell them in BPS or Walmart?I do a lot of light tackle fishing for fun with small spinning reels,so I am use to dealing with fishing with light line and small baits. A decent sized bass fights very well once you target them with light gear compared to the overkill tackle most bass fishermen use. 1 Quote

Super User flyfisher Posted November 12, 2016 Super User Posted November 12, 2016 I do all my sunnie fishing with my fly rod. Nothing beats a slow sinking spider. IT is always fin to catch a bass while doing it as well 3 Quote

I've had great days with that fly and even caught some very nice warmouths and bluegills. I think that you could also use an UL spinning outfit to cast them if you used 2 or 3 split shot weights further up the line. Quote
Jagg Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 I'm not far off from you. 4lb Nanofil with 4lb Trilene XL leader. 1/80 and 1/64 jigs with various plastics from 1/2" - 2". I tend to fish a 1/32 jighead most of the time, but switch to the lighter when they get tight in the mouth. 1 Quote

Last_Cast Posted December 15, 2016 Posted December 15, 2016 I'll use a ned rig, believe it or not.. Caught a whole bunch of decent sized ones for the fun of it on slow days Quote
tholmes Posted December 20, 2016 Posted December 20, 2016 I fish tiny jigs and flies on a float 'n' fly rig. It's easy to cast and deadly for sunnies and crappie. Tom 1 Quote
