Hey guys, my brother-in-law was asking me about what combo he should get. He's mainly a surf fisherman and has surf rods already, but he wants something that he can use for both fresh and salt water. He uses spinning tackle and is looking for something under $100. The combo that came to mind for me was a President or similar spinning reel and a MH Ugly Stik, but I figured I'd ask ya'll if you had any experience with something like that. Wasn't quite sure how to answer him.

Any recommendations are welcome, thanks!

Can't offer any advice on what to buy, but I will say that SirsnookAlot has used Pflueger spinning reels in both fresh and saltwater for years with no repairs needed.   The Ugly Stick is the number one rod for saltwater in Florida.....so I have read.  Seems to me you are headed in the right direction.  Personally I'd suggest looking at a different rod.  Maybe a used Redbone Hurricane or a new Calico Jack.

Have him look in some small mom-and-pop shops.  Whenever I am in DeLand, Florida I stop by a small shop near the airport.  First buy there was 3 used rods for $100 and 2 were Falcon Originals.  Forget how much for my last buy, but think it was around $35 for a used Allstar baitcast crankbait rod. Picked up a new Hurricane Redbone baitcast rod for $75 there.  Very nice rod for the money.

look for a Symetre FL on sale and a 7' medium calico jack. perfect for inshore and freshwater.

Forget the Symetre for the money a Pflueger President in a 6940 will cover inshore and freshwater. I own 6930s.35s, and 1 40. I like the 30 and 35s, but to cover inshore more I would go with the 6940. It will run you $60 at Dicks Sporting Goods. The Ugly Stick would be a good choice. If he does not mind spending a bit more money a salt water series Ugly stick might handle his needs better. Have him check Bass Pro online under spinning rods then salt water.

i think you nailed it Kyle, that's what i'd steer him towards!  Get the 6940 size and spool with braid and he's set!

I use an Ugly Stik Elite with a Penn Fierce 2 for both salt and freshwater. Performs great in both, and it would come in under your price point if you shop around. I will say that the MH Ugly Stik may be a little stiff for the freshwater stuff, depending on what he's going to use it for. For example, he'll have a tough time tossing weightless senkos with it. But, it'll do everything your average MH baitcaster will do. My Ugly Stik Elite is a med/light. I bought it for tossing lighter lures ( crankbaits, beetle spins, weightless senkos, etc.).
