Super User everythingthatswims Posted October 24, 2016 Super User Posted October 24, 2016 Today, my friend sent me a picture of some fish weighed in at a tournament he fished this weekend. I previously asked him if the lake had spots and he said no, so like any good friend would, I pointed it out when he sent me a picture of someone weighing in a spot there. Bottom line is I'm saying spot, he's saying largemouth. Let's hear it BR! Quote
Turtle135 Posted October 24, 2016 Posted October 24, 2016 that looks like a largemouth, look at how far the jaw goes back Quote
Super User J Francho Posted October 24, 2016 Super User Posted October 24, 2016 Neither look over 12" long. 6 Quote
jr231 Posted October 24, 2016 Posted October 24, 2016 I think largemouth too.. but . No where near an expert. 1 Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted October 24, 2016 Global Moderator Posted October 24, 2016 Too grainy on my phone when I zoom in to tell Quote
OCdockskipper Posted October 24, 2016 Posted October 24, 2016 I'd say largemouth with a very distinct horizontal band. For me, the difference is not just the jaw, but the head itself. To contain their future bucket mouth, even small largemouth have bigger heads than their spot cousins. If you can't see where the jaw line extends to, just look at the overall head. On a spotted bass, it will often look like it is too small for the body. Plus I have never seen a skinny spotted bass, it seems like they always have a belly on them. 2 Quote
IndianaFinesse Posted October 25, 2016 Posted October 25, 2016 Not sure weather it's a spot or a largie, but I am sure that the fish probably should not have made it past the tournaments measuring official, it doesn't look anywhere near twelve inches. Quote
jr231 Posted October 25, 2016 Posted October 25, 2016 Lol it's a dink.. but is it a LM or spot. I wish someone would chime in who thinks they are 100 % positive. I'm curious Quote
Super User Paul Roberts Posted October 25, 2016 Super User Posted October 25, 2016 Too small an image. I do see "spot" in the face though. Can't tell though. There are even hybrids out there too. 1 Quote

Bassun Posted October 25, 2016 Posted October 25, 2016 Considering the weather we had, two keepers (even if they just barely made the bump) isn't bad lol. I think it's too small of an image to be 100% confident, but I thought largie myself. But, I am never really convinced a big spot is a spot lol. Quote

Three fish for 7-13 won the tournament and three for 5-something got 2nd haha. Since you're from that area, have you ever heard of spots coming from South Holston? Quote
Bassun Posted October 25, 2016 Posted October 25, 2016 South Holston, yes -- there are definitely spots in there. Not much of any size that I have ever seen, or really, even heard of. If I remember correctly, there is no size limit on spots or largies, but there is a 14 or 15 inch minimum on smallmouth. Most of the bass are pretty small there from my experience. But it has been a few years since I've been down that way, maybe it's improved... Quote

South Holston fishes much better in the winter, lot of 20+ lb bags of smallmouth are weighed in there when it's super cold 2 Quote
NEBasser101 Posted October 26, 2016 Posted October 26, 2016 It looks like a small largemouth to me Quote

Super User Raul Posted October 26, 2016 Super User Posted October 26, 2016 I've caught thousands of dink largemouths exactly like that one. Quote

It hasn't gotten much better, I was there over the weekend. I don't get to fish it often so I never seem to be there at the "correct" time according to those who fish it regularly, and just like @TnRiver46 said, I've heard it's a good winter lake. That said, there are definitely spots in there, but that is 100% a largemouth. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 26, 2016 Global Moderator Posted October 26, 2016 It's a spot, I'd bet my favorite combo on it, but there's no way to prove it so we'll never know Some of the reasons being listed aren't determining factors in the "spot or not", debate. FWIW, one of my favorite local lakes isn't supposed to have spots, isn't listed as having spots, but I've caught a couple dozen of them from there How they got there? nobody knows, but there is no denying they're there. Next time, have him feel the scales. The rough feeling scales on a spot are a dead giveaway. 1 Quote
