My 20+ year old Mitchell 308 finally bit the dust this past weekend.  I'm looking at spending less than $100, and I am going to put the new reel on a 7'0" ML rod.  I am kind of leaning toward a president reel, but I thought I put it out on the forum to see what everyone else thinks.

I have both the president and supreme from pflueger and really love my supremes. The presidents are probably best reel for money out there, but my supremes are just smoother to me.

Yup.  You are thinking on the right track.  President is a well loved reel by many.  If you are willing to spend an extra $30 you can get the Patriarch on sale at Cabela's.  $70 off a $200 reel.  I'm tempted and hardly ever use a spinning reel.  Hard to pass up such a good deal.....but I am still resisting.

can't go wrong with a pflueger at the president level and above.  if i were you i'd try to find a supreme for under that $100 mark which should be easy enough for the models prior to the newer XT version.

I use my spinner more than my baitcasters because I like finesse fishing.  My president has been flawless.  I can't justify spending more on a reel when this one works so well.

The president is the gold standard for entry level spinning reels. If you want to spend more, I'd looks for a really good deal on something else. But otherwise, the president is the way to go.

I bought the new sienna 2500 during a trip because i broke one of my other reels. This new version is a lot better than the last version. Maybe not better than the president but definetly something to look at and will last a long time

I don't have any experience with the President, although they get great reviews here.  But the 1000 size Shimano Sedona or Sahara are great reels for under $100.

I have no experience with Pflueger reels, Saharas are magnificent reels, Daiwa has also great offerings, personally, when it comes to spinnng reels I refer Daiwa over Shimano.

This is spot on

And the Supremes are lighter. Well worth the extra money. IMO

Out of about 11 spinning reels my wife and I use, we have two Diawa 1300SS  reels (top of the line back in the day), 1 Shimano Symetre,  purchased for my wife to throw frogs with, (I liked the line retrieve per turn it equaled my 8-1 baitcaster), and 1 Okuma RTX30.  I purchased that one because it was  light weight and had a higher gear ratio, All 7 of the rest are Pflueger Presidents in various sizes and they range from almost new to almost 10 years old.

My reels have to stand up to freshwater as well as tidal water, bass. catfish, panfish, pickeral and stripers,, so they often get used in tough conditions. I have never been sorry a President was on my rod.

The president is a solid choice as the others have said. The Shimano Symetre is worth a look as well. It is currently on sale at cabela's for $69.99.

This exactly what Im gonna post. I bought president 6930 then bought sysmetre 2500 when on sale. They both perfrom very good at this price point. If I were to choose only one, I would keep symetre though.

the president is good, but if you want a lighter reel, go with the supreme. i love how smooth mine is...

Shimano Symetre or Nasci are 99 new but could probably get them cheaper on ebay or in the flea market. Both are great reels for the price point.

Pflueger spinning reels never disappoint.

President is solid but they have been surpassed in recent years for that price point. I'd go Shimano Nascl or Daiwa RG

Big fan of the Pflueger line. I'd also cast my vote for the Supreme - performs as well or better than reels going for mormethan double its price point.

I also own a Symetre and would rank it behind all of my Pflueger reels, including a Trion that is at least 15 years old.

I think pflueger is a little over rated. I have a couple. i also have some symetres, a nasci and some siennas and sedonas. All of the shimanos are smoother than my presidents. And i also hate the plueger knob, it feels so cheap

I agree with you except I think they are over rated more than a little.  Have had 2 Presidents and a Trion, don't care for them.   They work, but like priced reels from Daiwa and Shimano have proven better to me.

I buy the Tournament ZX reels (Daiwa) from Cabela's now instead and they have been great.  Never paid more than $50 for any of them, got 'em all on sale and they've been stellar performers!

Be careful rating the Shimano Symetre above the Pfluegers, I have recently read where some guys are having their Symetre reels lock up and Shimano has no idea why!  I own 1 and hope it does not happen to my wife's reel. These were all less than 1 year old reels.

Chiming in on the Shimano Symetre sticking issue.  Have two Symetres.  One problem free, other sticks, mostly during hot weather.  Have been able to get working again freely by removing spool and drizzling Shimano reel oil down the shaft while turning crank handle.  Need to repeat every couple of months.  Have one Pflueger President, less than one year old, which is problem free.  Would buy another.
