juicebass Posted October 23, 2016 Posted October 23, 2016 Hey guys, I recently purchased the Diawa Tatula type R 100 with the 8.0.1 ratio. i was under the impression this would have a high IPT... it only has a 31 IPT... i have the Abu revo SX in the 7.1 and that has an IPT of 29... what im getting at is I thought I would've gotten much more IPT in getting something with an 8 gear ratio... but he difference was only 2 inches.. i noticed some higher priced reels in an 8 or even 9 gear ratio have high IPT.. but the prices are super high!! is there anything in the 150-200$ range with a high IPT?? wanna get something with very high IPT for pitching and get my bait back gas for more pitches!! I mean but maybe 31" is sufficient enough? Will I really notice a 2" difference?? thanks! Quote

Molay1292 Posted October 23, 2016 Posted October 23, 2016 Can't overlook the second half of the I.P.T. equation, spool diameter, you need both to have a reel with high I.P.T. 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted October 23, 2016 Super User Posted October 23, 2016 Daiwa Lexa 400 HSL (7:1) has 37.7 IPT Tom Quote

Would I be able to change spools to change IPT? Any info on that? like can I change the spool on my Abu revo sx to make the IPT higher? Quote

Super User WRB Posted October 24, 2016 Super User Posted October 24, 2016 Not to get too technical IPT is based on circumference, larger diameter spool has longer circumference. Faster gear ratio spins the spool more times with each handle turn; 8 to 1 means the spool spins 8 times for each handle turn. The IPT that reel mfr's list is based on a full spool of line, as the line comes off the reel the spooled line diameter gets smaller, the circumference is shorter, the IPT is reduced. IF you want maximum IPT the spooled line must be full! Tom Quote
