CybrSlydr Posted October 23, 2016 Posted October 23, 2016 Was really anxious to check this place out. According to https://www.trails.com/tcatalog_trail.aspx?trailid=XFA072-139, One of the better big bass lakes of southeast Ohio, with size and motor restrictions. Covering 204 acres, Tycoon Lake is on the short list of select lakes that the Division of Wildlife is trying to turn into a trophy bass lake. And by all reports, it’s working. Located in central Gallia County, Tycoon is surrounded by the Tycoon Lake Wildlife Area. The lake has numerous parking areas, excellent shoreline access, one boat ramp, primitive camping, and a wheelchair-accessible pier. The lake is weedy along the bank, and several coves are covered with thick growths of lily pads. White amurs have been introduced to control weed growth. If they are caught, they are to be immediately released. Visibility is normally 4 to 5 feet. The average depth is 6 to 9 feet at the deepest. The lake contains endless stump fields, and fishing at night can be hazardous to your electric motor. Impounded by damming a lowland swamp, all timber was left in the lake. Key species: Largemouth bass, bluegill, redear sunfish, crappie, channel catfish. Sounds like a great place to fish! So, we drove the appx. 1hr 45min to try our luck! There are two reasons I really wanted to fish this like - One: It's allegedly a great place to net some big bass and Two: it has a fishing pier!!! As anglers who are currently bound to the shore, getting out into the water as far as possible is next to impossible - but with a pier, we can get a lot farther than normal! The lake is gorgeous - give it a few weeks for the trees to change colors and you'll have a great scenic spot for camping. Today it was EXTREMELY windy. Temperature was in the 50s and we're glad we wore wool socks, boots and hoodies! Almost wish we'd brought gloves as well, but it wasn't quite that cold. My brother's set-up. My set-up. This is about as close as we came to catching anything today - my Rat-L-Trap. Thought I'd go for a little "perspective" shot. My brother being... my brother. lol I like to tell myself that I'm missing the half of the Senko because a fish struck at it and got the end of it - but I'm pretty sure it just flung off while casting. Another scenic shot. Here's the link to the full album, I only a couple more that I didn't post above. https://www.flickr.com/photos/cybrslydr/albums/72157674202145811/with/29868121844/ Another trip, another fruitless effort. My brother and I are beginning to develop a complex - he's still not caught a fish and I've only caught 4 - and one was a catfish on a 4-8ft crank! Disheartening is certainly a word I'd use. We used lipless cranks, lipped cranks, texas rigged Senkos, wacky rigged dropshot Senko, Super Shad swimbait... Not a single nibble that we could discern. Is it time to hang up for the year and wait until Spring? I sure hope not, because that's a long way off! Anyway, I hope you folks have more luck than we do! 1 Quote

We fished both sides of the end of the pier, both in front of and behind the pier, we fished the causway to the pier, we fished near the bank... It's not like we were stationary. Quote
jr231 Posted October 23, 2016 Posted October 23, 2016 Did you drop shot right underneath the pier lol Quote

jr231 Posted October 23, 2016 Posted October 23, 2016 You and your bro need a canoe..! You can just troll around and catch all kinds of species. I'm not sure where Beverly is.. so I can't really help you on a spot.. bank fishing big lakes is really tough. The fish have so much room. I'd try to find some ponds or rivers for bank fishing. Quote

As for pond fishing, you can reference my numerous AEP ReCreation Land threads in this very forum. Quote
jr231 Posted October 23, 2016 Posted October 23, 2016 You're a few hours from me... I don't think it's lure selection. Traps and senkos are proven fish catchers. I really wish I could help ya man. If the fish aren't there you won't be catching fish. I don't use any electronics when I use my jon boat and I usually do pretty decent.. I can only target the areas I THINK are productive.. it's hit and miss really. I wish I had that fancy stuff but I make do with what I have. Everyone knows it's more fun when you catch fish. Im telling ya though.. the smaller body of water is key when you bank fish IMO. Whether it's a channel , river, pond or small lake. I tried to bank fish a 3200 acre lake this past summer with all kinds of promising laydowns and got nothing. I hiked so much through the woods to areas off the beaten paths with no reward but poison ivy. I dont think one time on a canoe is a good enough experiment! I know it gets pricy renting one so id just save up and get one. No matter what; you have a better chance of finding a bass in that canoe then you do on a small portion from the bank... Quote
jr231 Posted October 23, 2016 Posted October 23, 2016 I guess it'd be hard packing a canoe on a BMW LOL Quote

jr231 Posted October 23, 2016 Posted October 23, 2016 Hell an inflatable raft is a better option!! Quote

jr231 Posted October 24, 2016 Posted October 24, 2016 I just meant better than being stuck on the shore !! Quote
