William Rossi Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 I skip alot of wood docks and they seem to snag everythink. I use 1/16 oz. ty Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted December 5, 2016 Global Moderator Posted December 5, 2016 What size hook? I skip a lot of docks and don't have issues with snagging there either. Is there a lot of cross support beams or something? Not meaning to sound doubting, trying to find if there's a solution for you other than having to pop for expensive, weedless style heads. These new Ned heads don't really have enough lead to put a weedguard in I'm afraid. Have you tried one of the slip on style weedguards? There's some guys around here that use them and like them pretty well. 1 Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted December 5, 2016 Super User Posted December 5, 2016 I have settled on the Owner Ultra heads for my weedless ned head. It does really want to have the lure glued on, but I bought some tiny fly fishing hooks and over the winter i am going to try my hand at tying them on as a weedguard. Quote
Super User ChrisD46 Posted December 30, 2016 Super User Posted December 30, 2016 Here is the correct Seibert link for his version of the Ned Rig jig head (morel) : http://www.siebertoutdoors.com/Morel-Jig-Head-1022.htm . *Best all - around Ned jig head hook size is a #2 ; I also use a #4 but have not used a #1 size (although I'm sure it would work fine on the 1/8th oz. version morel) ... **Mike , what size is the hook in the morel jig head ? 1 Quote

Spinerbait58 Posted February 15, 2017 Posted February 15, 2017 Is it best to use paint or powder paint ? I still hand paint my jigs and then put a coat of clear epoxy that is my jigs with weed guards. Thanks Small jaw 67 great video's on hand tying hair jigs, thanks, my son-in-law graduated from Millerville college Quote
Tim Kelly Posted February 16, 2017 Posted February 16, 2017 I powder coat mine to make them stronger, but if you want to paint and epoxy them, I'm sure the epoxy would be as good or stronger than powder coat. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted February 16, 2017 Global Moderator Posted February 16, 2017 I powder paint mine. They don'tever last long enough to need a super durable paint job. Quote

Super User fishwizzard Posted February 24, 2017 Super User Posted February 24, 2017 I finally got to fish the new heads and I am not a fan. The keeper seems somehow worse than the Zman one and the #1 hook is just too big and rolls over and snags very often. I had a mix of Zman, the New, and some Gopher heads and fished them all in the same pond. The New heads would snag far more often and would break off rather than pull out like the other heads would. They also seemed to get hit less but I don't have any real numbers to back that up and was not fishing uniform colors across the different heads. I would try them again if someone offers them with a smaller hook but I am not getting anymore of the #1 sized ones. 1 Quote
Super User RoLo Posted February 24, 2017 Super User Posted February 24, 2017 In the natural lakes we fish, no exposed-hook jig is going very far without fouling (if fished properly). You might try a 'Brewer's 1/16oz Slider Head' where the worm is Texas-rigged and fully weedless. Roger Quote

Roger That technique isn't really good for Florida, it is more of a Midwest (hence the name) and Northern technique for clear water. 1 Quote

That's what they said about Swimbaits in Florida, which were concocted in Californa, but today swimbaits are a mainstay in Florida. The Ned Rig was adapted to the Midwest, but a minor tweak is all that's needed to adapt it to the weedy lakes in Florida. By simply Texas-rigging the worm on a 1/16oz Z-bend jighead, it will catch runt bass all day, even when other lures aren't. Anglers in our local tournaments often use a similar setup just to fill a limit, then change their tactics for kicker fish. Roger 1 Quote

I would argue the runt part, but this rig has caught me more fish then about everything else I throw combined. 2 Quote

I need a weedless head too. The mushroom style, in light weights, does ok in live vegetation, but its all the dead stuff, the floating stalks, and detritus/muck/gunk that fouls me up. Quote

If these are working for you then I say stick with them. I make most of my own lead heads but I use these as well. Look into the Jobee jigheads if you are looking for an alternative with a bullet weight head. Allen Quote
