New NED rig heads

I finally got to pour with the new mold and I'm pleased. I will get to test these out early next week but based on what I'm seeing I think they will be a winner. From left to right is 1/16oz, 3/32oz, and 1/8oz and all have a size #1 Owner 5313 hook, light hook that won't bend out. Sharp and light enough for solid hook set with 6lb line and strong enough for 10# braid!

those look nice!  bait keeper looks MUCH more solid than the zman version.  just looking too hard at them can cause them to fall off!  looks like a super solid hook too.  update us on how they work out!

What mold are u using on those? They look really good!! I'm about to order the new do-it Midwestern finesse mold and put sickle hooks in them.

That's the correct mold that Do-It just released. I poured my first 100 with it this past week and fished it for the first time yesterday and it performed well. 

I stuck with the Eagle Claw Lil' Nasty sickle hooks in a #1 and they turned out nice.

Maybe winter time is the time for me to start melting some lead myself. Are you guys powder coating these after they are poured or painting them? I go through a ton of finesse heads every year.

I powder paint mine in several colors but I doubt it's really necessary.

I don't even bother painting mine anymore, but when I did I  just dipped them into a container of paint and hung them by there hooks on a cardboard box to dry, and usually is used red paint.  I started out that way but didn't notice an increase in catch rate, so it wasn't worth the extra trouble for me.

Would a #2 lil nasty fit in the mould or is the leg to the eye too short?

I believe you'll be fine with that hook as well. The hole diameter is a little larger than this hook, so I get a little run out between the eye and keeper at times, but it doesn't seem to effect the performance of the keeper.

That is good to hear.  I have had great luck with the Gohper ones but a wire keeper is so much less hassle and I in no way need to get involved in casting at this point.

I Gave up waiting for the exchange rate to improve and bought the mould. Very impressed. I like the way the lead is sized to be a similar diameter to a TRD. The wire keeped works very well too. The only negative is that they need to be powder coated as there isn't enough lead round the hook and wire to keep everything secure, Powder coating it makes the difference and makes the whole jig strong and durable enough. With the Lil Nasty hooks they make a very sound ned jig. 

 

Side issue, the first batch of EC Lil Nasty hooks I bought were great. I ordered another batch from Barlows with the mould and they're not quite the same. The wire is softer and more prone to bending and I had a couple of misshapen hooks in the 100 pack, which I haven't seen from EC in a while since they started making better quality hooks. A little disappointing, but it still makes a great ned head that hooks so well you rarely lose a fish, and it's often difficult to get the hook out.

I fish mine through all kinds of cover and never have needed a weedless version. The right combination of hook size and jighead weight eliminates a lot of hangups. I think a lot of the request for weedless versions come from guys using heads much heavier than what is standard on a Ned rig and fishing them more like a shakyhead. I never use a head heavier than 3/32 and the bait is rarely contacting the bottom except the initial fall. When you get the right combination, the rig is surprisingly snag resistant for an open hook presentation.

That stinks you had issues with the hooks. My last 1,000 pack had 1 hook with a broken points, and 2 aberdeen "J" style hooks. I didn't count them all out, so maybe those 2 hooks weren't taking off my 1,000 count, but 3 bad hooks out of 1,000 I can live with when they're priced like the Lil Nasty hooks are.

I fish the ned a ton when wading small streams and rivers and a favorite presentation is to cast it up on the edge of the bank right above a hole or a cut.  I give it a slight pop into the water and start my retrieve.  It works very well and the reduction in hook ups from using a weedless or tx rigged jighead is worth it to me for the reduced hassle and time spent snagging.  I also fish a narrow canal with a really slow flow and weedless lets me pull it through the tops of the grass more easily and with less ruined casts.  Open hook seems to work better for most other cases though.
