What brand is this canoe?

I picked up this canoe last year, the brand wasn't in the add, nor was it really important to me.  I paid $150 for it, it floats and has enough room me, another person and plenty of gear for fishing/camping.  Its fiberglass, one thwart in the middle, two plastic seats and has a white birch bark look exterior.  I've looked in to this some already and found American Fiberlite, but thats not the brand.  I stumbled over the correct brand last year but forgot it about as quick as I saw it.   Its a canoe brand from I believe the 80s that no longer exists.  I can't for the life of me remember the brand or find it online.   Anyone want to take a stab at jarring my memory on this one?

Crypt, I'll get a pic posted on here tonight and I'll check for a serial #.  No VIN that I know of.

Yeah - it sorta puts a whole new perspective on the term "car-topping" !  

And, for the OP, I can't identify the canoe - it has a somewhat generic hull-form...

The brand is right there in the picture. It's a genuine Indian brand canoe. And i know that sounds sarcastic, but they were made by Rivers & Gilman moulded products I believe, and if my research is right they went defunct when Gilman died. My grandfather used to have the same canoe. It was a great boat.

I saw the Genuine Indian sticker on it. The guy I bought it from told me that was not the brand... but Rivers and Gilman was what I was trying to remember.  He told me they were the company that made it, but when I tried searching for genuine indian canoes, I was searching "indian canoes" "genuine indian birch bark canoes"... i was inundated with hits for how the natives built their canoes... pretty interesting stuff lol

Yeah, you pick up a lot of that stuff when looking for it. But the genuine Indian brand canoe is a registered trade mark to rivers & Gilman. Those really are some of the best canoes I've ever had the pleasure of using, so if you ever decide to let it go let me know. I've been hunting for that exact canoe for a while for sentimental reasons, and also because they are great canoes lol.

Hold on to her, and take good care of her. She won't ever let you down as long as you do.

thank you!  I love the canoe, but its a bit heavier than what I wanted.  I can still manage to load it myself, but I need to make it a point to stay strong enough to get it over my head lol!  I wish it was a little more modifiable for fishing purposes, but for its capacity and stability, I wont complain.  I have thought about selling it because i do a lot of solo fishing and could benefit more often from a kayak.

Most canoes can be "modified" as much as you want...

that would be ideal, but i still need to be able to roof mine.  i know people have made theirs so everything can come apart fairly easily, but i dont have a ton of storage.  just a shed, no garage... yet, so Im trying to keep it simple.  i may be getting a free row boat that floats, but needs some work.  it would make a great project but then add in the cost of a small trailer and the work done, and its no longer free.  Im sure if i did this, once i got started I'd find more ideas and it would become a not-so-cheap project.

Car top ?  I do, and still have the clearance to pull into the garage and be ready to leave the next day...

Storage ?  Easy enough. For you, with just a shed, you could get by with hanging the canoe on one wall or overhead (if you have the length) and all the miscellaneous gear would fit on a shelf or in a storage box. Then, make a dolly or have a bracket inside the shed to hang the trolling motor...

It's a fine canoe for fishing.  I much prefer canoes for fishing over kayaks. Outfitting it for fishing should be easy and not expensive.  Add a couple of clamp on rod holders.  Humminbird makes a clamp on fish finder called Fishin' Buddy that is ideal  for a canoe. Or if you have a little bit of skill you can make a clamp on mount for nearly any fish finder  using wood and/or PVC pipe or a combiation.  I did it and I'm about a 2 on 1-10 scale when it comes to DIY  things. I think it cost me about $15.  You can also make a DIY mount for a trolling motor or  buy one. Also you will not regret getting yourself one of these Sit backer

Two points.  I assume its a tandem canoe.  If you are solo, you want to get yourself close to the center of the canoe when paddling to control it better. Sitting solo in the back seat of a tandem makes paddling difficult, especially if there is a breeze.  If it is  a symetrical canoe, you can flip it around and paddle from the front seat. I do that with my tandem canoe when I'm going solo  (this doesn't work with an asymetrical canoe) . Or there are after market  canoe seats that you can place toward the center.

Also, though you have a rack, you need front tie downs, especially if you will be taking it on the highway. Racks fail and the last thing you want to see is your canoe bouncing down the road in your rear view mirror at 65 mph.  There are a number of ways to do it. You can go to a place like  paddling.net for ideas from the paddling experts.

I love fishing out of a canoe. You almost feel closer to the fish, it's a much different experience. Enjoy it!

We don't need to discuss what's in the closet. I always said cleaning was just moving the mess until you are out of places to move it to. my garage requires ninja reflexes, a wire harness, some dude on a laptop telling you what to do 3 buildings away when he can't even see it, and a love interest between you and Emmanuelle Béart in a van somewhere sitting with a big old black guy who is telling you to stop goofing off and focus to traverse safely. 

 

Edit: and don't forget Craig. he has a very important job of bringing refreshments after the tool box heist has concluded, rewarding us with the sought after 10mm wrench.

Funny, just came across one of these on Craigslist, reasonably priced, wasn't sure about until I showed up here. The post does mention it being "heavy".

You should grab it if you are the least bit interested in it. they are a bit on the heavy side, but they are great canoes. 

 

Edit: as far as price, it's not uncommon to see these things go for $8-900 So 150 was a steal. if you run across one for cheaper you should definitely grab it.
