Maryland small ponds?

Hey guys buddy of mine just moved to Maryland he's fished the Potomac river. Few times but it's about an hour away from his house. Any small ponds or lakes somebody may be willing to share? Help him get on some good bass

Laytonsville right next to Damascus

Clopper Lake in Seneca Creek State Park: http://dnr2.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/central/seneca.aspx

Little Seneca Lake in Black Hill Regional Park: http://www.montgomeryparks.org/parks-and-trails/black-hill-regional-park/

Both are grass lakes with healthy largemouth populations.

He is also close to the C&O canal.  It is frustrating and at times un-fishable, but when it is on you get like 8-10 miles of this:

It is amazing habitat that can provide both size and numbers.

Do you have an Adress to the closest launch or area where he could launch a kayak and park? Looks amazing

 I'm posting for my phone so to be a bit brief, but tell your friend to look up Old Anglers Inn.   The area with the amazing rocks is called Widewater and the access is a parking lot just across the street from the Inn.   

 The canal suffers from extreme fluctuations in water level and is often totally unfishable. Pop in to the Maryland thread and look for the posts by the user fried lemons, he is like the canal master.

Just stubbled onto this thread. Sorry but these answers arnt from locals. Laytonsville is not close to those places. Checkout triadelphia and rocky gorge. For ponds, gotta scout em out yourself. There’s a number of good ones not very far.

Triadelphia is closed until about summer of 2019 for a dam rehab project.  I fished that reservoir from the rocky bank structures a ton as a kid and caught a lot of crappie.

Pitney Run is not that far, just cost to get in. It's 300 acres, trolling motor only and has boat rentals.

Laytonsville is within a half hour of Clopper Lake or Black Hills.

I'm not a local, but I do play one on TV. MD is polluted with bass. Check out any retention pond on google earth, and hit the closests ones to home until you find some consistent action, some will be good with numbers, others with size.

The trick to this system is trying to determine via googleearth which retention ponds are surrounded by waist-high grass swarming with ticks and which ones have reasonable bank access.   

 

I don't mind fighting ticks if I know to expect them, but my fishing outfit changes dramatically depending on where I'm going.

Waders bro. Chest high neoprene slides through briars easily. For ticks there’s a great product called lymez wrist and ankle cuffs

No but a buddy did once earlier this summer. Caught a 3.5 on a lipless within 15 min.

I think I would last about 30 min in neoprene waders during the summer around here.  I have a pair of softshell pants that do great with the thorns, but the urge to wear shorts is so strong.  I will check out the tick stuff, I have an OK system now, but I always want more.  

 

A buddy of mine does a ton of bio field work and he swears that the trick to defeat ticks is to wear a pair of XXL pantyhose, pulled up as far as you can get them.  Tuck a undershirt into the hose, then tuck your shirt into your pants and cinch you belt down tight.  That just leaves your head and upper chest vulnerable, but they are easy to check throughout the day.

That’s Widewater. It’s pretty much always fishable.

Yea, it is a great spot but I never bother to go on weekends due to the crowds.  I need a kick in the rear to motivate me to drag a kayak down there.  

 

The rest of the canal from there up onto Seneca Creek can be a great fishery, the first few pics up there are from around Pennyfield Lock.  But the canal can really suck if the water is way down or super muddy, I am always nervous as hell when I go fish there as the conditions can be so rotten and it's such an awful drive for me.

Welp, here is the water level at Swain's Lock today;

I went there to hike with a friend and the canal was low/dry and the watered spots are frozen over.  The river was low but looking great, I fished it  a bit where I could get down to it, but without waders and a buddy I am leery of scrambling too far out on the rocks.
