TheJman Posted October 19, 2016 Posted October 19, 2016 Hello everyone. After roughly 10 years of being out of fishing due to a family issue and having to sell my bass boat to pay some unexpected bills I've got back into it this summer. I just have a small bench seat style aluminum boat that I've been getting out on some small lakes in my area. Not the best thing to fish out of but I'm just glad to be back at it. I'm looking to get a new spinning rod setup to throw my favorite 1/8 jig. I was always an Allstar rod guy and loved them back in the day but it appears that they were bought out and don't produce the same quality rods anymore. I don't have any experience fishing other brands. Always was a Daiwa reel fan but I'm willing to consider other brands since my overall budget for the rod and reel is $250. I've done plenty of research and I'm leaning towards either the ML 6'9" Fenwick HMG or the ML 6'10" St. Croix Mojo. I'm open to suggestions though. For the real I'm digging the Pflueger supreme xt in 3000 size and the Daiwa procyn ex in 2500 size. Again I'm open to suggestions. Looking forward to hearing everyone's experiences with these rods and reels. Thanks in advance. Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted October 19, 2016 Super User Posted October 19, 2016 Since the Mojo has got it's recent redesign, I don't see how you could go wrong with it. Great rod for the money and it should handle what you're looking for it to do. 3 Quote
Fishin' Fool Posted October 19, 2016 Posted October 19, 2016 For the money Bass Pro Shop Johnny Morris combos are a good way to go too. Other than that I'd grab a St Croix Avid X ML during TW sale and whatever Pflueger President reel your remaining funds can afford. Choice #2 is probably what I would do but if you can't wait 5 weeks option 1 is solid. Since you are newly back to fishing you may not know TW = Tackle warehouse . You're probably gonna wish you never learned of this place. Quote

I can hold out until then to see what kind of deal I can land since I still have a couple of my old Allstar's and team Daiwa reels to hold me over until then. In the meantime I might take the hour drive to my closest Cabelas to get a feel for the rods in person and then see what TW puts on sale. I appreciate everyone's response. Quote
Super User Angry John Posted October 19, 2016 Super User Posted October 19, 2016 I like the fenwick eliete bass 6'10"ml xfast rod and i use older daiwa reels as i feel the quality is much better. The sol fuego and advantage are a few years old now and i feel the best reels around. For some reason i use the smaller 2000 series spinning reels and love them. 1 Quote
TheJman Posted October 19, 2016 Author Posted October 19, 2016 I think I'll get the highest quality Fenwick or St. Croix rod and either a Daiwa or Pflueger reel that TW puts on sale and fits in my 250ish budget. I might go up to 300. I doubt I can go wrong with those four options. I'll let you guys know what I end up snagging. Quote
pawpaw Posted October 21, 2016 Posted October 21, 2016 I have a couple Pflueger Supremes and they are great spinning reels. 1 Quote
