abelfisher Posted March 18, 2006 Posted March 18, 2006 I have seen the new boats come with a somewhat low end FF at the steering wheel location. But I also have seen guys put higher end FF there as well. How do you guys like to locate your fish finders and why; assuming you have one at the wheel and one up front. High end FF upfront or at the wheel? Low end at the wheel or up front? I am curious as to how you locate them and why. Thanks! :-/ Quote
Cajun1977 Posted March 18, 2006 Posted March 18, 2006 ON THE NEW NITRO F/S I JUST BOUGHT I HAD TO PUT A RAM MOUNT ON THE STEERING CONSOLE TO PLACE MY GARMIN 250C CAUSE ITS THE ONLY SPOT I HAD TO PUT IT BUT ON THE PLUS SIDE THE WIFE SAID I COULD GET THE COLOR ONE SO I COULD SEE IT BETTER CAUSE I HAD TO LOOK THRU THE WINDSHEILD WHEN IM FISHING FROM THE FRONT Quote
NBR Posted March 18, 2006 Posted March 18, 2006 Ideally I would have the same at both locations, if one fails you can move them back and forth. Since ideally rarely happens, I have the higher end on the console. I spend more time locating structure, cover and bait running the big motor. Then I use the front deck locator to keep me in the right position. Quote
Madhouse27 Posted March 18, 2006 Posted March 18, 2006 I have my better finder up front. I spend way more time there then I do behind the wheel. About the only time this might backfire is when I am on a lake for the first time which is somewhat rare. If I got a new one with GPS then I would put that one on the console. Ideally there would be a nice unit front and console. Quote
skeeter_bit Posted March 19, 2006 Posted March 19, 2006 I have my higher end at the wheel and lower end on the deck I look for cover drop offs and other things while at the wheel I have gotten in to the habit of turning off both when fishing so not to spook fish. I need all of the help I can get . As far as the one on the deck 90% of the time folks are casting away from the boat so you are not fishing what you are seeing anyway But I always use them to help find fish If I do use the front unit and see fish or cover I will back way off of it and cast to it . On my old bass tracker I only had one on a ram mount so when I went to the front I just turned it around . I am realy trying not to use the front one as much this year I was finding myself watching the graph and not watching the wind , sun ,birds, schooling bait and all the other thing mother nature is trying to tell us Quote
Super User cart7t Posted March 19, 2006 Super User Posted March 19, 2006 The high end goes at the wheel. I'm looking for potential structure while I'm motoring so I want a larger screen and much more detail. When I'm upfront fishing I'm using that locator as a referance only. Quote
Guest ouachitabassangler Posted March 20, 2006 Posted March 20, 2006 My ideal is to run two LMS332c units at once, the console unit for navigating by GPS at night and on new lakes, the sonar to locate structure. The bow unit is used locate spots to drop shot, whacky rig or vertical jig over, and most of my GPS waypoints are set there since most of my time is spent there. I don't like having to turn around and try to read a screen on the console from the bow, and I learned turning the console unit on a ram will eventually break wires. If I need a different view, like zooming in on bottom I have what I need right below me, not having to jump down to fiddle with the console unit. Jim Quote
DeereRun97 Posted March 21, 2006 Posted March 21, 2006 Is that ture? Fishfinder's can spook fish? :-? Quote
Hillbilly_Hooker Posted March 24, 2006 Posted March 24, 2006 I only have one FF on my boat. It's mounted on a swivel mount just in front of the windshield. When I'm using the big motor, I have it turned toward me to locate structure, etc. When I get where I'm going, I can swivel it around so that I can see it from the front casting seat. It works for me... Hillbilly Quote
