Super User HoosierHawgs Posted October 8, 2016 Super User Posted October 8, 2016 Just got a new (to me) pickup truck! I was driving a Toyota Corolla and it was nice but I like the pickup! I was looking for a Tundra but a coworker of mine had a 2004 F-150 w/118k miles, mostly highway, w/no damage or anything. Because we were friends and he has a newer truck he drove more he gave it to me for $3,500! Looks impeccable. Put $300 into tune ups and have some upgrades planned for it soon. Hopefully I am starting work on putting in a new stereo tonight! 3 Quote

I'll post interior pics tonight Quote
S. Sass Posted October 8, 2016 Posted October 8, 2016 Seems like a good deal cant hardly buy any truck with all the fender still on it running and driving for $3500. Hell I probably would have bought it as well if it was undervalue as it appears. I would have turned it though to get what I wanted. I feel the same way about Fords never one of my top picks. My grandfather was a mechanic and retired from Ford and loved them. It was all he ever had and what I learned to drive feeding the cattle. That 300 inline 6 cylinder was a beast of a motor when it came to reliability. Now days I have completely removed Ford as a brand I would support (buying new) since they decided to fund a racist hate group. 2 Quote

It's pulled my boat all over the Midwest and Canada many many times. 1 Quote

Super User Gundog Posted October 8, 2016 Super User Posted October 8, 2016 You got a good deal Hoosier. Don't let them hater beat you up over it. I have owned a Ford Ranger and it was one of the best little trucks I ever had. It had over 100k miles before I had any problems that weren't expected (things like replacing the belts, brake calipers were expected). Even the problems I had were simple and cheap to fix. Enjoy your new (to you) truck. Hope you have many happy miles ahead of you. 1 Quote

Had her checked out by a friend who is a mechanic and he said all checks out. Just put in brand new spark plugs and oil, filters, ect. As for stereo, got the head unit and front door speakers in. Doing back doors tommorow. Easy as pie 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 9, 2016 Global Moderator Posted October 9, 2016 As long as you got the new spark plugs in without issue you should be okay. I think the 04's were the first year they used the junk plugs that snapped off in the motor all the time. I had an 06 and when it was time to change mine the shop told me about it and said for every one they snap off it was $75 for them to dig it out. I started looking around online and found horror stories of people getting charged up to $4,700 to get their spark plugs changed. I also found there had been a recall but my truck was past the mileage to qualify. Then as soon as the warranty ran out, the transmission started slipping. I don't drive my vehicles hard, but it pulled my boat a ton, but that was also when I only had a 16' aluminum. Not trying to be a downer, just stuff to keep in mind so in case it starts having any problems you can bail out before it gets too bad to trade in for something else. 1 Quote

I did have the spark plugs addressed because my mechanic friend made me aware of this. A friend of mine who has an '05 told me about the tranny problem, but said his happened at 80k so it is possible I got a good one. Thanks for the info! Quote
Super User Senko lover Posted October 9, 2016 Super User Posted October 9, 2016 That's awesome man. I'd be all over that deal. Can't wait to purchase my first truck. 1 Quote

Super User Sam Posted October 11, 2016 Super User Posted October 11, 2016 Great deal. Now "super size" her so you will be cool when towing your bass boat. 1 Quote
Smjunior25 Posted October 11, 2016 Posted October 11, 2016 I'm not a Ford guy at all, but that was a hell of a deal! 1 Quote
Super User JustJames Posted October 12, 2016 Super User Posted October 12, 2016 Nice looking truck, I wish I were as lucky as you. Im also looking for a truck here instead of using my wife's venza to tow a boat all the time. Im not a fan of American's truck but all used Japanese trucks price are so high here in CA. On the other hand a friend of a friend got 2003 GMC serirra 1500 extended cab very low mile and very good condition inside and outside. He wants 8700 for it. Im not sure if i should go for it. 1 Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted October 12, 2016 Super User Posted October 12, 2016 Congrats on getting a heck of a deal! Have fun with it! 1 Quote

Super User JustJames Posted October 12, 2016 Super User Posted October 12, 2016 @HoosierHawgs. Yeah I check KBB, seem like he want at the higher end of the price (private sell price). The thing is Im not sure which model he got Working Truck/SLE/SLT. He is actually a new boyfriend of my wife close friend so I dont want to negotiate the price as much. And so far he is not in a hurry to sell. The truck got only 35,000 miles on it though. I own one american car before and it was so much problem with the car after a period of time, unlike japaniese car which more of reliable and cheaper in maintenance for a long run.. 1 Quote

Right, I don't know as much on GMC, but IMO older American trucks (pre 2008) are probably a little more reliable. What worries me is that the mileage is SO LOW. Not driving a truck and not getting the chance to heat up the engine can actually be a bad thing IMO. Is it an extended cab? Quote
