My number one choice for Spring and Fall fishing for Smallmouth Bass are the X-RAP, XR-10. 4", Dives to 4' to 6', 7/16oz. Best colors for the waters that I fish the are #1 Clown, #2  Hot Head...The X-Rap is “all about the action.” It’s the perfect size, shape and 3D illusion of a minnow. Prominent scales and lateral line on the fuselage capture and flash light like a beacon. It can be fished both in an aggressive “Slashbait®” technique or with a classic Rapala wobble. The angler defines the cadence for maximum effectiveness.

To get the most out of the X-Rap Slashbait action, use your rod to give the lure more action. The X-Rap responds well to twitches, snaps and jerks – just vary the length and speed of your rod movement to create different actions from sweeps to aggressive darting.

When fish are extremely active, use the hard “snap” retrieve to really excite them; with your rod tip down, use a short snap-snap-pause retrieve to get the X-Rap to track in a very narrow manner. When fish are suspended over deep water, or to trigger shallow fish; use the “sweep” retrieve. With the rod tip up, use a long sweep-sweep-pause retrieve for a wider tracking action.

Great choice for your #1, mine is a tube. More specifically it's an internally weighted tube rigged weedless.  I can present it anywhere in the water column with any number of different actions, plus I can go with a vertical or horizontal presentation.  I guarantee both yours and mine will be tied on one of the five rods on my deck for the remainder of the season here.

You may want to check this link out if you fish in Wisconsin on Lake Geneva at night for Smallmouth Bass and Walleyes.

I know that the jury is out on if "Fish Attractant" really works. I have been using fish attractant for 20+ years. All that I have to say is that it has never hurt my fishing, in fact I feel that it has improved my catch rate. Edge Hot Sauce Fish Attractant is what I have been using starting when I was at Clear Lake in California ( April 15 2000 ) and I found out what Bryon Velvick was using when he brought in that mother load of a fish weight. I realize that he was fishing a large swimbait but still why couldn't I use the product on most of my plastics and hard baits. So guys and gals grease up you baits and start pulling them in.

Byron Velvick used the Extra Edge Hot Sauce on his Jerry Rago BV 3D to win the trophy at the Bassmasters Elite Series Golden State Shootout on Clear Lake.
"I put that on my bait every few casts. It created a chum trail that brought the fish to the bait, plus it acted as a lube to make the bait more slippery which helped get a better hook set."

Hot Sauce fish attractant has really become an established staple item in many anglers tackle and there are some bass fishermen that won't leave the dock without it! Hot Sauce features the real essence of crawdads suspended in a thick, waxy base that will stick to your bait and stay where you want it. The generous 5 ounce bottle features a flip top cap so you can squeeze out just the amount you want and put it right where you need it. If you've used Hot Sauce you know how effective it can be and if you haven't, you'll be in for a pleasant surprise!

Tried drop shotting a zoom tiny fluke and it worked great. Not just for smallies but largemouths killed it too.

The Megabass - Ito Vision One Ten is my number #1 Smallmouth Bass Jerkbait in clear waters that I fish. The internal structure of Megabass lures is different than anything else on the market today. The external walls are thinner, but completely supported by internal supports, and each class of bait utilizes unique Moving Balancers that create the erratic action bass can't resist. The finishes on Megabass lures are unique as well. To give them the most life-like look, Megabass gives each bait numerous coats of paint that blend to make the color perfect, and they don't exhibit a sharp line from one color to the next, but blend and fade into each other like in real life. All these features makes Megabass the leader in lure development and one of the "secrets" that win some big money all over the US.

Great SMB lures ~

SMB are suicidal during the spawn - so during that period a spark plug is OK.

What's getting it done during pre-spawn, the dog days of summer and the fall transition ?

Refer to farmers post -

Most of my smallmouth fishing is summer wading. Four lures stand out:

1.  Wackey rigged 4" senko type worm

2.  Zoom Super Fluke Jr. on Gammy 1/16 oz.  jighead

3.  Ned rig

4.  Small buzzbait (just for fun)

I've had much luck in small creeks with a yellow and red panther martin

Ive also had luck on a pink finesse worm on a drop shot in 30' near large rocks
