JIgheads and Livebait?

Anyone ever take a jig head and use live bait on it much like saltwater fishing? just read an article on this was wondering if anyones ever done this.

Just about everything will eat a jig tipped with some type of live bait - bass, walleye, crappie, bluegills...a jig and minnow is a good tactic for clear, cold water bass.

I put live bait on jig heads all the time, you can give the bait action even after it dies

When using like a big shiner or something do you work the jig a little bit it basically just use it for Weight?

My go to crappie setup. 1/8oz jig and a fathead minnow. 

My go to deep walleye setup. 1/4oz jig and a leech.

Yeah ,its a common practice .A minnow on a marabou jig is a crappie killer   I scooped up a freshly dead shad and used it as a bass jig trailer and first cast caught a channel cat .

Try the fluke on a jig head. Lot cheaper than minnows and I've had days where the bite was white hot.

Yup, though instead of a fluke I really like Gulp minnows.  I've caught smallmouth, largemouth, walleyes, catfish, even a couple muskies on a Gulp minnow.

Interesting ^ only thing of gulp I use is the powerbait crappie nibbles. I'll have to try those .

When wading for smallies, I will occasionally, when my plastic needs replacing, flip rocks on shore until I find a nice fat worm, then I stick it on my jig and toss it into the the deepest undercut I can find.  It always catches something,  usually a large sunfish or small cat.  Oddly, never a smallie, I think they might be more cautious then the others.

Banana jig with a live minnow is standard rig in the mid west, northern US and Canada. Doesn't matter if the minnow is fresh dead, it doesn't last very long.

I had a hard time trying to teach my inlaws to use soft plastics, they always fish with a jig and minnow for decades and may never change becuase they catch all types of fish, bass, walleyes, pike, trout crappie etc.

I rarely use one but fish with several buddies that do and both methods work very well. In either case, I only move the jig enough to keep it off bottom when the bait is alive. Then once it is dead I give it more jigging action as if it were a soft plastic lure.

I do it with live shad during the winter to get them down in the current, mainly targeting wipers but I catch plenty of largemouth doing it, along with everything else in the lake.
