Is the Whopper Plopper topwater lure that effective? Just heard about it just recently.

They definitely DO work! It's a pretty versatile bait too, you can pop it, slow retrieve or burn it back to create a huge amount of commotion. I have not had any luck on my 130's yet but have had good luck with my 90's (especially the Perch color).

i broke down and bought one a couple of weeks ago. So far, I'm not a big fan. fish trow it easily and it gets hung on everything. for me i'd rather use a buzz bait, or a pop r if i want to go slow.

I resisted the temptation for as long as I could, but 2 weeks ago picked up a 130 size in Chubby.  That did well enough for me to go out and get the 90 size in bone this past weekend.  The 90 has done even better for me that I had just ordered a 90 and 130 in the Loon color.

I thought this was surely one of those gimmick lures, but my goodness has it turned into a very fun lure to fish.

I have had a lot of luck with the 90s (blue blood & perch).  I have tried to catch fish on the 130s but have yet to catch one.  I finally did get a fish to try and take it but missed it yesterday.  Stay away from the Silent versions....

I've caught one fish on mine all year. A little 1/2 lb dink. I've caught more bass with bigger size on the Boyd Duckett walking popper.

I have fished mine for about 5 hours collectively on ponds, reservoirs and lakes and haven't gotten a single blow up. I've been really disappointed but it seems 99% of other anglers are having pretty good luck with it. I use a 90 in Perch.

Stay away from the silent ones?  Do they make two kinds?  I purchased a 90, which is silent.  Didn't see anything else.

There is a silent version of the 130, not sure about a 90 version.  I made the mistake of ordering a couple.  The only difference is they do not have the rattle in the head.

If you like the Whopper Plopper, you should give the Jackall Pompadour a try. Pretty much the same concept - makes a helluva commotion, and can be stopped/paused in place to elicit strikes.

I haven't caught anything on my Pompadours but they are easily one of the most fun lures to fish with (along with the Whopper Plopper)!!!

I have been looking at the pompadours but noticed the price on them so I think I will wait to see if Santa Claus brings me one.

The thing that I think makes the Whopper Plopper so effective is that the sound is so much different than buzzbaits or any other fast moving topwater.  I admit I wasn't sold on them and so I reluctantly got 2 in the 90 size and my first try didn't yield anything but there wasn't a topwater bite going on. The second time I was getting good fish, solid 2lb up to 4.5lbers on a consistent basis, enough that I do think there is something to the sound. If you haven't had success, try using a different bait and see what happens, I found that I don't do well trying to get fish to come from the deeper water for it like I can do with a spook but paralleling laydowns and deadfalls or bringing it close to cover can really draw some nice fish out from the cover.

 I have been doing very well with the 130 size for big largemouth. At that size I do not catch as many smallmouth on it. You will get fewer bites but they will be bigger. I have been doing very well since the beginning of September on it. You got to commit to this lure. It does catch weeds easily but that isn't where I have had the most luck with it.  I have been targeting submerged cover and structure offshore and I have been extremely impressed. Last week I got a 7-1 and a 6-6 on a Plopper as well as a lot of other bigger fish. Those big fish make a big splash.

I feel like a lot of anglers are getting the 90 size because they feel the 130 is a little too big. Honestly I would recommend just getting the 130, you'll catch 1lbers on it all day. The 90 has issues with spinning as well and has waaaaaayyyy less commotion and gets swallowed up by waves or wind chop.

the 90 size works good so does the 130 they are both good baits just stay away from those buzz bait/ WP gizmos they sell those things are crap!

YUP!!! We bought the double plopper to try out and it sucks! The whole thing just feels cheap like if a big bass ever did hit it would destroy it but rest assured, that won't happen as they don't like this gizmo. You must retrieve it slowly, too fast and the thing will list to one side and just plow water and the propellers won't work. As good as the original Whopper Plopper is that's how bad the Double Plopper's are!!!

I haven't had any luck with my 90 yet, but has anyone else noticed that it lays over to your right as you're retrieving it?  I wonder if this is by design to simulate a struggling fish laying on it's side, or mine isn't tracking correctly.
