Is it really that good of a lure? Is it all that and the kitchen sink?

I remember when the chatter bait came into existence, that lure caught on like wild fire.

Imagine a buzz bait that floats. Imagine a spook that creates even more of a disturbance. Imagine a Torpedo, but bigger. 

Now put them all together. Boom; Whopper Plopper.

I'm with ya man, I've yet to try it and people are asking about a dedicated rod just for it lol.

It was one of my top 3 baits this summer! I couldn't even tell you how many fish i caught on it....including 2 over 6lbs and many over 4. Loon and bone is all I fish.

Believe me, the hype is real. I'm one of those people who has a rod dedicated to the 90 size Plopper (usually the I Know It color). I always have one tied onto my Lew's Mach 1 mh/f baitcaster. Occasionally I will throw the 130 on my froggin rod with 50lb braid. The 90 is where it's at for me though.

It is that good of a lure...just as the chatterbait and other bladed jigs. Either wouldn't be this wildly popular after years if they weren't the real deal. They'd have faded away by now if not.

I have 3 and have spent a few hours throwing them and no bites.

So it's not some magic bait that makes fish bite, it's just another tool like any other bait.

I'm still catching plenty of fish with worms, creature baits, jigs, and crankbaits that really buying more lures right now is a waste. I cant use all the lures I have now and get mad at myself for taking so many.  I have to start cutting my tackle back to a single bag. So no I haven't bought the latest craze and probably wont. At least not for some time unless it shows up in my LTB. And if that is going to happen it better be soon. I got to stop getting these lures.

They're good baits. I think the main appeal to them is they're easy to fish, and they seem to attract larger than average fish.

From all the testimonies I've read they must be good baits. But, having bought three of them myself, I've found that the Heddon Baby Torpedo works much better for me. It has the same buzz bait action with much less splash on entry. The Torpedo blade has better action and is a lot cheaper. My ploppers will be relinquished to the gimmick box.

I have to know what else you have in there if it's not just a figurative junk tackle box. Do you actually consider it a gimmick or is that just its proper place in your  collection?

Junk box. But at $13 ea I'll have to keep one in my Plano. There's too many people that like them for it to be a gimmick. I'm just saying the baby torpedo works better for me.

A friend fishes the BFL as a co-angler and at the last tournament at High Rock he said almost every boat he looked in had a rod with a Whopper Plopper tied on.

I have yet to get a fish on it. I have fished it when I can't keep them off my other top waters. I have thrown it in schools of busting bass, nothing. fished it in private lakes that you can get bit on a bare hook, nothing.

I picked up to 90`s last night so when I get a chance to get out I plan on throwing one out there to see how good it is myself. Does seem like everybody loves them though. Ive always had luck on the torpedo`s and spooks

They definitely attract large fish, and not only bass  Caught this toothy critter on a 90 plopper this afternoon (I Know It color).

It was probably my second best lure of the entire year (besides a swimjig which singlehandedly made the spring for me and got me my PB) so I would give it two thumbs up. If I hadn't seen the results firsthand I would probably be pretty skeptical as well. I had probably my best day of fishing ever earlier in the summer using it exclusively all day. About 15 fish with many more missed, all pretty good quality for my area.

I hope everyone grows tired of them soon.  They worked sooo much better when nobody knew about them yet.  I probably caught 4 fish over 4lbs before I finally caught a regular sized fish. That was three years ago. Caught a 3.5 just last week.

Isn't this just a down sized or re-tooled musky lure, the Whopper Plopper?

I know I've seen musky lures that do the same thing just a much bigger version.

What am I missing here? Is this like reinventing the wheel?

no lure even comes close to constantly catching fish like the lure that is constantly thrown.

I got one in bone, caught a dink on my first cast.  Caught an other dink on my third cast.  I got a little cocky and snagged and lost it on my fifth or sixth cast.  I just picked up an other one, this time in Loon, but have yet to fish it.  I very much prefer them to buzzbaits, being able to pause and retrieve it slowly seem huge and the WP felt a lot easier to steer around snags.
