Super User soflabasser Posted October 6, 2016 Super User Posted October 6, 2016 Went for a quick fishing trip earlier today and caught a bunch of bass along with several other species of fish. Will go fishing again tommorow after the hurricane passes for good.Guess these fish in my area didn't get the memo that a big hurricane is coming this way. 2 Quote
Super User Sam Posted October 7, 2016 Author Super User Posted October 7, 2016 Some of the best fishing is right before a hurricane. We used to clobber them in south Louisiana before big storms headed our way. 1 Quote
Super User Sam Posted October 7, 2016 Author Super User Posted October 7, 2016 LSU-Florida game is postponed. No police; no school; players worried about their families and want to go home ASAP; no neutral site considered; will have to check everyone's schedule to try to play the game at a later date. 1 Quote
Super User N Florida Mike Posted October 7, 2016 Super User Posted October 7, 2016 I am in the Jax. FL area.We are expecting Matthew today. The storm seems to have jogged east slightly, which is potentially good news.I have most of my immediate family with me here at the house.2 Grandkids, daughter, and wife.My son lives 1/2 mile down the road. So far so good.Spent all day yesterday getting ready.Just when I thought I was done, something else would get my attention. This is pretty uncommon for us here.I was a little kid when Dora hit us directly.I remember it very well.We had sustained winds of 80-90,with gusts over 100.Had fun with that one, felt completely safe.No damage to our house then. So,we live on a lake,as some of you know.We are high up,but live right by the outflow spillway that goes into the ditch/ Creek that goes into the St John's river over 1 mile away. One concern is that the lake will have bad flooding .I cleaned the ditch and spillway yesterday to maximize outflow. This morning, even though it rained hard overnight, the water level had not risen. So my hope and prayer is that the drain can go faster than the rain. Another concern is winds.I have a lot of stuff, traps, equipment, boats, yaks, tools out back.Looks like Fred Sanford's junkyard!.I put up all I could.I have 2 open air structures with most everything else under it . Also have a cracked window that concerns me. This is our concerns.I really want would appreciate your prayers.I will update later. Quote

I used to tape my windows here (before I replaced them) when we had hurricanes or storms. That could help your cracked window if you haven't done so already. Quote
Super User N Florida Mike Posted October 7, 2016 Super User Posted October 7, 2016 Thanks,D.Yeah,my main concern is family safety.Im " not skeered " too much anyway. We live 16 miles inland also. As far as taping the window, I read where the powers that be don't recommend it so I didn't.But they are wrong about as much as they are right,so...... Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted October 7, 2016 Global Moderator Posted October 7, 2016 I got my sons family with me also here on the west coast. They live 1/2 mile from the ocean in Indilantic just across the causeway from Melbourne. Dont look to good there but it could have been a lot worse. We're told the storm surge is just down the streeet off A1A.   Mike 1 Quote

HeavyTwenty Posted October 7, 2016 Posted October 7, 2016 Not looking forward to the power outages. Lost power for 10 days in 2004. Is fishing any good post-hurricanes? Quote
Super User N Florida Mike Posted October 7, 2016 Super User Posted October 7, 2016 It's starting to get nastier here now.Wind Is really picking up.Pouring rain.Somebodies pontoon boat has come loose out on the lake. Â mike Quote
Super User N Florida Mike Posted October 7, 2016 Super User Posted October 7, 2016 They're now saying the mouth of the st Johns River has had the highest storm surge since 1898.My lake is still 2 feet lower than the highest I've ever seen it.But we have several hours to go.Power went off 1/2 hour ago. Â Saw this homely bird out in the 40 mph winds. 2 Quote

Global Moderator Mike L Posted October 7, 2016 Global Moderator Posted October 7, 2016 We're on our way back to Indialantic to see whats left and what condition it's in. Apparently the causeway's are open up to Patrick Air Force base after being inspected by the COE. We're told that power is real sparodic on the beach side but the mainland seems to be fine. They had hurricane force winds but not the cat 3 force as it stayed off shore about 40 miles. The utilities co shut off the water to the islands so now everyone is under a boil water advisory from Vero to Cocoa. Hopefully we can get in and we will fair well. NF Mike hang in there Pal, this too shall pass   Mike 2 Quote
Super User N Florida Mike Posted October 7, 2016 Super User Posted October 7, 2016 The storm center went by about 30 miles offshore. Our beaches area is bad I hear.Historic flooding. In my area,we had 60-70 mph winds but just in gusts. My Jon boat is Full of water.Around 12 inches deep. The lake hasn't got up as far as the highest on record ( yet ) It's still a foot lower somehow.Got debris all over the yard but nothing serious. Thankful.Thankful for us.But those at our beach need our prayers and support. 3 Quote
Super User Sam Posted October 9, 2016 Author Super User Posted October 9, 2016 it is 4:36AM on Sunday, October 9th, and it is still raining in Richmond, Virginia plus the area towards Tidewater and up the coast into Maryland and Delaware. Rain should stop around 6 AM. Lucky for us in Richmond that we did not have high winds or we would have lost power and had major damage. My bass club had only five guys fish Lake Gaston and to say the least the tournament was a bust. One guy caught 3; three guys caught 2; and one guy skunked. Glad I stayed home and watched football. Hope everyone is OK, especially our Florida, Georgia and South Carolina members. Let us know how you fared. Quote
Super User N Florida Mike Posted October 9, 2016 Super User Posted October 9, 2016 Me and the grandkids rode around some yesterday. There are trees down all over.An area to the south of us was especially bad.Lots of pines and oaks down.Wooden power poles snapped off.Lines down. An acquaintance of mine was out in his yard.Said a tree hit the back of his house, the Creek flooded into his house, and he's a beekeeper and all his bees blew away. There's one stretch of road out here that is underwater for 3/4 of a mile. We lost power for 25 hours ,but our s.school teacher lent us his generater. I still cannot find out about much because our cable is still out. Concerned about my cousins in NC.The storm went right over them.No response from them yet. Quote
Super User Sam Posted October 9, 2016 Author Super User Posted October 9, 2016 Wow! I expect we will read more stories like yours. Glad you and the family are OK. Hope you get power back, soon. We lucked out in Virginia other than for the flooding in Tidewater. Keep us posted. 1 Quote
Super User whitwolf Posted October 9, 2016 Super User Posted October 9, 2016 I just talked to several family members in Eastern NC. It's a mess. No power and all that comes with a hurricane. Prayers for all those affected by this storm and like the majority of the times all the communities will come together, clean up the debris, and rebound like they always have! 1 Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted October 9, 2016 Global Moderator Posted October 9, 2016 Family is all good down here. It could have been a lot worse if it got only 10 miles more west. Lots of debris, my boy had some trees down, pool cage is a mess but that's about all.  They're still under a boil water advisory but other than that it'll be back to normal in a few days. I really feel for you folks farther north. I stayed home for Charlie and will never do it again. You guys be safe prayers to all  No Fla Mike....I don't know exactly where you're at but I have generators, blowers, trimmers, rakes etc. If you or any family needs something I'd be glad to load up and bring it all to you or meet you somewhere. I'm in Indialantic so I can be there in 2 hrs max. Post or PM me if you need anything and I'll be coming you way.  Mike 2 Quote
Super User N Florida Mike Posted October 9, 2016 Super User Posted October 9, 2016 Mike L.,Thanks for your generous offer, but we're good now.We got power back and now it's just clean up time. What I'm most concerned with is my family in NC.Theres several groups of them, and I've now heard from most of them. Another twist in the situation is that my beloved mom passed away this week and we are taking  her back home ( hopefully ) this sat.in SE NC. for her burial. Wow.Just watching weather channel and one of my distant cousins was being interviewed by Jim cantore about the rescue operation. Again, very appreciative of your offer. Mike Quote
