Tom i know a lot of people north of me use them for stripers , i'd rather use a slower wake bait . i must say that is in the top three of lures that can spool you on the cast !! did blackdogbaits fold up shop ? EDIT : just looked and their website is up to date and they are still selling the wooden 8'' lunker punker http://store.blackdogbaits.com/product/8-wood-lunker-punker-custom Quote

Golden Shiner up and now that i look at it , i might just have to put some 1/0 ST41's on it and fish it in the next couple weeks !! Lake Wholford has a good golden shiner population . Quote

Super User WRB Posted October 4, 2016 Super User Posted October 4, 2016 Black Dog was doing very good until deciding to go off shore and the quality didn't meet thier standards. Tackle Ware had back orders for over a year and finally gave up. The wooden Plunkers have a very different action than the molded plastic Punkers. The Wooden trout 8" Punker was a hot item 6 years ago when we had planted trout! SDI 8" trout Pupfish was the hot surface lure for stripers. I see the link has anyone tried to order anything? Hudd guys will be outside my house with pitchforks and torches within the hour I'm sure, but never got into them as much as I like the concept of top hooks. More of a finesse guy then a big bait guy though for sure. Quote

No pitchforks and torches needed.....lol But you have to admit, it's really hard to crawl a bottom treble hooked hard bait across the bottom of a lake at slow speeds which is what Hudds are ideal for where hard baits aren't the best choice. But might follow you with a snorkel to retrieve all those hard baits when they get snagged up trying to fish the same bottom I can fish a Hudd. 1 Quote

I only throw bigger baits and trebles when I know it's a pretty clean bottom. I try to throw top hooks when it's suited- I just can't seem to not catch everything (weeds) anyways. Maybe I just stink at them, I didn't mean to say they aren't good baits though... Just not really for me up in MA. As I said before I've moved more to the finesse side of things. Quote

I've put a lot of hours and miles on a couple different Punkers and have yet to have a boil. My Slammer on the other hand, has lots of hours and miles and lots of fish to it's credit including some pretty solid fish for this area. Most of our lakes are pretty stained, so I think the slower moving Slammer is probably easier for the fish to find. They'll eat spooks though so I know they'll eat a Punker, just have to find the right fish in the right mood. 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted October 4, 2016 Super User Posted October 4, 2016 This isn't an attempt to teach skilled swimbait anglers how to fish a Punker, that is up to you to figure out. What works for me is a faster retrieve similar to a 1' jerk bait action on the surface in lieu of a 4" walk the dog spook type retrieve. Slammers are a more lazy swimmer similar to a rat, very different from surface lures, it's a wake bait. Hudds are lazy swimmers at all depths and that is why they are so effective. Glides are a combination of slow lazy with quick random movements. Whatever it takes to generate strikes! Tom 1 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted October 4, 2016 Super User Posted October 4, 2016 I've caught a few bass on Punkers. It's mainly a northern pike bait for me, though. In fact, they're in one of my pike bait boxes, lol. 1 Quote
