Looking for a digital fish gripper scale. I've read a lot of bad reviews about the Berkley and Rapala ones.

What's the best digital fish scale gripper?

Posted

I have a Berkley one.  It's probably 10 years old and still going strong.  I've accidentally dropped it in the water once and when it dried out it still works.  I've also checked it with known weights and it's pretty sccurate

Best one I've found is whatever digital scale you want and add a pair of fish grips or the rapala fish gripper to it.

This topic came up before and someone here was using a digital scale off eBay that was really inexpensive. I actually was going to look for it but didn't ever find it before I lost the thread.

So far I have never had a digital scale so hopefully this thread offers some up to date ideas. I want one.

I copied this as well with a Berkley digital. It's so much easier weighing the fish and is much less risky compared to trying to hook the fish under the gill plate or jam a big hole in their jaw just to weigh them.

,I had the Rapala Lock N weigh Scale gripper which was on clearance 75% off when Sports Authority was going out a few years ago and it normally sells for close to $75 and is up to 40lbs, comes with a bracket, and it was too big to carry, it needs to be mounted on the boat.

I also don't like putting fish on a scale, I know that probably sounds like a wimpy attitude, but I really think the best grippers are the cheap $10 floating Plastic one's that come in bright colors, and to weigh a fish, get a Rapala Decal or ruler that has the weight based on length, then if you want to get really accurate take a piece of mono and wrap it around the girth.

If you plug it into the Formula's on this site and other's, I have found that the weights are always accurate, I have yet to find an inexpensive scale that was accurate imo. I just feel that big hook in the gills or mouth can't help the stress of the fish.

I truly believe using the length and girth formula makes you better at estimating as well. I never trust those "10lbers" on a DIgital scale unless I get a length.....Pictures lie and it is not always the angler. 5lb bass are big in any part of the country, I have a pond where I live that has a few bigger fish in the 3-3.5 range and I have had several people tell me they caught 5lbers out of it, and they are using a scale & seem like good fisherman, and I have put every fish in this pond, so I just wonder about most big fish. The simple 19",21",23" rule usuallly is right.

Thx. That's pretty long/big though. I'm looking for a more compact unit, this the Boga grip style.

Why don't you just buy a 15lb boga. They weigh to the nearest 1/4 pound. If you have fish between the marked lines it is 2 oz heavier than the last increment line weighed. So basically the boga is accurate to 2 ounces when weighing fish from 1/4 lb to 15lbs. And you never have to worry about the battery dieing.

Thought about that but I like the big, easy to see digital numbers.

Google Salter Brecknell scale. Weighs to the 1/2 ounce with a tare feature & a large digital display. Just add a fish gripper to it. Same scale that they use on the tv show featuring catch & release tournament fishing.

At the risk of being laughed off of the forum....  why do you guys recommend going with a separate pair of grips and fairly basic scale, as opposed to a combined grip/scale like those sold by Rapala, Berkley, etc.?

I have lost and then beaten to death one of each of these combined scales myself in the past two years...

Because the FishGrip is handy on it's own.

Aside from it being handy on its own, I feel it's easier to operate and has a better hold. It's not a spring loaded grip, it locks down like a  pair of vise grips. Plus, if the scale dies you can just buy a new scale.

Ok that makes sense.  Thanks to tcbass for starting this thread, and these responses, I am putting an order in to replace my damaged all in-one gripper.sale with a gripper and compact scale.
