Heaviest mono you've used for pitch/flip

Past or present, what's the heaviest mono you've used for heavy cover flip/pitch/punch presentatiuons.  I've always stuck with 17lb XT (used 20lb Big Game once) but I've read of guys using 20,25 or 30lb test, so I'm going to give 30lb (.022 dia) a shot just for the heck of it.  Leave the braid comments out of this.  I use braid as well but just interested in those with heavy mono experience for this discussion. 

The truth is, I prefer mono over braid but line stretch is dangerous when you're hanging up in heavy cover at close range.  I got blasted smack dead center in the knee cap last week with a 1/2 oz jig that might just as well have been fired at me with a stout slingshot so one of the things I'm looking to do here is reduce stretch by going to larger diameter mono line.  Anybody here been there, done that?

Not much of a flip and pitch guy but I do like mono! My only advice is that you may want to invest in a set of knee pads/protectors.

30 lb. is the heaviest i've used for flipping/punching. and yes have had a jig take my hat off from close range.

Acknowledged!  I do have some padded knee sleeves that would be excellent protection.

Was there at least a reduction in stretch with 30lb?  I know it will still stretch but hoping it's reduced some at least.

No sir.  I stay away from it.  I don't think it any better in the stretch dept.

Might try the Sunline Defier Armilo mono.       It is expensive but it does have much less stretch than most mono's, it is a quality line and you will notice it as soon as you open the package.    Back it with something cheaper and it ends up not being to costly.

I've never used more than 20# mono but I plan on stringing up a baitcaster with weedeater string at this rate and seeing what happens

I personally don't go over 17 , any more than that and I'm using braid

I've used 25 and 30. One of the big bass lakes I get to fish on occasion is full of nasty trees and it's possible to have to pull a big bass up from 20+ feet deep through those trees. Bites decrease significantly with braid, so that's not an option. It isn't easy to do, but with heavy weights and extra care to keep the line manageable, it can be done. FWIW, I mainly flip and pitch with mono unless it's in grass.

Back in the early 70s I threw 25# Big Game, dropped down to 20#, dropped down to 17# & finally settled on 15#.

Yes there's a difference in stretch but you trade of subtleness, 25# is stiff. Some guys like stiffness when flipping/pitching, I do not!

30 pound test big game mono is the heaviest I like to use for bass fishing.

Not the biggest fan of braid either but have started using it more and more for certain things. That being said, I usually don't use mono for pitchin/flipping either...I like to use copolymer (mostly P-Line), it has less stretch than mono and is way more abrasion resistant. And have used as high as 25lb but typically use between 15 to 20lb test.

No sir.  I stay away from it.  I don't think it any better in the stretch dept.

a little less but not that much. that's why I use braid

I guess not.  What reel are you using it on?  How many feet of line do you get on the reel?  Not that you need much but...
