Too light to mount?

Get a quote from Lake Fork Taxidemy for a bass mount using your numbers, then you will know exactly what the costs are. Nice LMB but Louisana has Florida strain LMB is some lakes, the northern strain LMB grow big.

I've never really considered having anything mounted.  However, if I did, I think I'd have trouble going with a replica.  I fully understand and agree with the arguments: durability; releasing the fish; cost; ease; etc. 

But, I think that every time I'm sitting in my (future) cabin on the lake looking up at it, I'll have a certain unease, knowing that it's 'fake'; that it isn't 'the fish'.  Sorta like getting your fiance a CZ engagement ring - even if she's OK with it...it'd always be in the back of your mind that you aren't really 'authentic'.

IDK...perhaps I'll feel different when I land that DD and have to decide...we'll see.......soon, I hope

Stretching a cured gray skin with colorless scales over a generic fish shaped form, adding glass eyes, fake gills and painting the skin is somehow real? Finding a skilled taxidermist that knows how to persevere fish skin and is a good artist today is difficult. A replica eliminates the skill needed to make the mount, both replicas and skin mounts require artistic skills to paint the mounts.

Well I got my fiancé a moissanite ring and I have a replica of my DD on the way.

I'm much happier knowing nobody slaved for the rock and my fish is back in the lake.

As others have said, and as I have done with PB's of mine, get a picture or two of it printed out, put it in a shadowbox frame, and you can hang the lure you caught it on in there. I should take photo's of what I've done with some of my fish and post them here.

I agree with others:

-Entirely up to you.

-Replicas are the way to go. Keep the genes in the water, let the fish grow, let someone else have the experience you had.

-For me, it all depends on the average size per location I'm fishing. If I'm in FL or TX, there's no way I'm buying a replica of a 6#.  If your home lake only pumps out 1 and 2#'ers, and you land a 6....I'd consider it. Get what I'm sayin?

I honestly haven't mounted a bass yet,but see nothing wrong with someone mounting a +6 pound bass from Louisiana,Texas,Florida, or even California if the catch means alot to the person who caught it.For me my 3rd biggest bass is the one I definitely plan on getting mounted soon,since it was the biggest bass to date that I caught from a public park from land where the fishing pressure is extremely high(caught her on a artifical lure).She is probably still swimming in that lake and releasing her was one of my proudest moments in all the years I have been bass fishing.

 I would have a replica made instead of a skin mount, why ? Cuz who knows, maybe I'll catch her again next year weighting another pound.

@soflabasser I want to know how big it was. Lol you don't have to tell the lure.. I'm guessing a worm ? 

I bet that did feel good. In a pressured pond an average angler would think there may not be much in there. And you pull out a beast. That's An awesome memory.

Yes it felt extremely good to catch a 10.3 pound bass in a highly pressured public park and felt even better watching her swim away strong after I released her.Let me know when you come down to South Florida and I will show you some pictures of this bass and other big bass I have caught from land in South Florida.

That's really interesting... Both are the man-made version (apparently naturally occurring SiC is rare), one looks like a diamond, one is black? and goes in a rod guide... I'd like to look more into how those guides are made.

90% of the people I know that have been fishing for years the exact same lake I fish every week have never caught a 4 pounder, let alone a 6 er, so I´m not try to discourage, it´s just a fact of life, actually ( I have fished that lake for 35 years ) the biggest bassI have caught from it was a nine and half, hell, a 6er from it is still an interesting catch on any day.

i'd be stoked to catch a 6+.....  i can't seem to break that 6 mark myself.  i'm holding at 5lb10oz right now.  that said, i'd just get a bunch of pics and put it right back in the water.  something close to 10 though i'd be thinking long and hard about the replica mount!

I caught some nice bass, crappie, pickerel and trout but I never mounted any. One of my buddy's caught a 4lb bass and bragged and had it mounted. The bass in my pic is 6lb 1oz and caught in the same place.

Just about the time you mount that fish, you will catch a larger one.  So....GO FOR IT!!!!!

In my personal opinoin, pictures is all you need. or if you want a mount get a replica so you can release the beauty back into the waters

To me, having a fish mount in my study keeps my spirits up, expectations of a bigger PB alive and memories of not only catching it, but those that were with me when I did.  A photo on a frame just doesn't do that for me.  That fish was caught back in '87 while fishing with two good friends that have since passed on. 

I've since bested that catch. Both times while fishing by myself. I considered having them mounted at the time,but couldn't convincce myself. Chances are, you'll catch something bigger and I hope you will.  The question you need to ask yourself is how much does catching that fish mean to you and why do you want a mount.

My dad got a 4 pounder mounted about 20 years ago. He keeps it tucked away in his closet because we give him crap about it frequently. I'm trying to get him on something over 5 so I can surprise him with a mount for his next birthday.

Although I've caught much bigger, the one bass I have on the wall was 6 pounds. A long fight and hook in the gills did her in and I decided to get it mounted since it was my biggest at the time.

I have a small fork point buck mounted when i was young as it was my first deer.  Its embarassing at first then I think of what it represents and the memory with my dad and my pride goes out the window.
