Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted September 20, 2016 Global Moderator Posted September 20, 2016 The thing about a bait like a Slammer, it's a topwater and you fish it on heavy gear. I fish mine on 20lb Big Game. Unless I do something really stupid, or just hook a monster in a really bad place, the bait should last forever. Obviously if you live in pike country your mileage may vary. Personally, I'd rather spend 50-100 on a proven fish catcher, than spend $100 on assorted baits looking for the magic bullet that doesn't exist. I prefer the 7" Slammer because it catches Wal-Mart girls, and future Wal-Mart girls. 3 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted September 20, 2016 Super User Posted September 20, 2016 You don't need anything other than a MH for the Mini-Slammer. It's only a little over an ounce. Quote

Super User NYWayfarer Posted September 20, 2016 Super User Posted September 20, 2016 The SG suicide duck looks like one of those lures that catches more people and their wallets then it does fish. 1 Quote
Super User MassYak85 Posted September 20, 2016 Super User Posted September 20, 2016 I ordered a 3D Rat but am holding out on the suicide duck for now. I'm not sure if it would really do any different than a whopper plopper in many scenarios, but it does have that wider profile, and has the top hook option so it can be fished in places the whopper plopper can't. The thing with the suicide duck is I don't feel it imitates a duck that well, sure it looks like one but does it really look like a baby duck swimming or trying to get away...IMO no. When baby ducks are scared they do this frantic side to side wobble as they kick their feet. I guess it would be hard to replicate though . Quote

I was thinking of giving it a try in the Black Bird version but wondered how effective it is considering it looks like a black baby duck and not really like a black bird but could a bass tell and/or care? No, they don't care. And almost certainly they do not see it as a "duck", or bird of any kind. Unless of course a particular bass happened to have a lot of experience eating baby birds. And that is likely a mighty rare fish. Fun idea, though, as in "toy". Hey, I understand the fun in that. I've made some fun lures over the years. One of my favs was a 4" long human I cast with melted plastic worms in an old Creepy Crawlers mold. It was a Tarzan mold and I caught about 10 small bass on it before it was little more than a torso. But the bass didn't mistake the lure for a fisherman. 3 1 Quote

Super User J Francho Posted September 20, 2016 Super User Posted September 20, 2016 I'm picturing a guy in a dive suit, and Whopper Plopper fins for feet. Life size...for catching great whites. Quote

I have a hard time coughing up $20 for a single bait...lol. If I go with a rat/mouse bait it will most likely be the Spro BBZ1 Rat OR maybe the Live Target Hollow Body Field Mouse. JFrancho is right on this one. I have both the spro rat and a bunch of slammers. The slammers outcatch the rats on my boat. They do cost about $10 more, but they are floaters so you won't lose them, and they will catch more fish for you. The slammer is a handmade lure, the rat is a mass produced lure..you would be supporting a guy that makes baits as opposed to a shareholder board. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted September 20, 2016 Super User Posted September 20, 2016 "MS" stands for Mike Shaw. My Slammers have his handwritten initials on them. Quote
Super User Big Bait Fishing Posted September 20, 2016 Super User Posted September 20, 2016 i think there is another side to this in that it is fun to catch a bass on something out of the norm , if everybody just wanted to catch fish consistently , every body would just throw Senko's ! i like to throw big baits , trying to emulate a injured trout , yeah , i might not get a bite at all for three outings straight , but there is that anticipation of it that drives me . there is always the thrill of '' what if '' i can have the bait get bit no matter how big or how strange the lure is ... 2 Quote
