Savage Gear Suicide Duck

What are your thoughts on this lure, good? Bad? I was thinking of giving it a try in the Black Bird version but wondered how effective it is considering it looks like a black baby duck and not really like a black bird but could a bass tell and/or care?

If it looks like food. And a bass thinks it can take it . Then it will . 

I think you'll probably get more takes from pike and musky though.

BD, I don't mean any offense...really...but for someone trying to live on a limited fishing budget...you sure seem to gravitate towards expensive stuff....

I know...Cadillac taste on a VW budget...lol. Most of this is dreaming although I do have a $25 Gander Mountain rebate coming any day now, I also have a $25 rebate from another coupon source and $20 i have saved up so in total I have about $70 to spend on fishing stuff. After that it'll be pretty much only Holiday's and Birthday's.

That and savage gear stuff isn't terribly expensive. You can get one at Cabelas for $14.

I personally an gonna get the 6" duck in wood duck (looks like a baby mallard or baby goose which I see at toledo a lot) and 11.25" rat (that includes the tail, so it's more like a 5 or 6") in brown (looks like a small nutria rat or maybe even a baby beaver). I'll definitely report here when I get them

I love my Okuma Rods and Reels......And a few of the lures they make but I would guess this is overpriced and will be discontinued within 2 years based on how most Duck lures have sold in the past, and the same with Many of the Savage Gear baits which look awesome, but then often let you down. 

I would have a hard time paying $20 Plus for a Topwater Duck when I can buy a bone color Spook or Hollow belly (Spro makes a baby duck color which I purchased since I love how they look. It is a good color as well, I would think the Duck will look like a "Fake Duck with Hooks"?

Just a guess. Do the feet paddle with batteries, Otherwise how is different from a topwater of similar size? 

I am a sucker for buying tackle, but I have kind of noticed that savage Gear lures are more eye candy then Fish candy, Kind of like how River2Sea will make some awesome looking lures that you think will be great and then they just turn out to be flops,but then they have a few proven winner's. I can't say Savage gear has any winner's except the Sand Eel which Stripers hammer, So a Sluggo works just as good and I buy the Jigheads. 

Savage seems opportunistic with trends and they have turned out a ton of lures in only a few years. Most have been disco'd in the states now that I think about it, or are super cheap on Ebay. Just my Take...No Duck. Ever for me. But I am sure it will get bit.

 

Using a fake Duck would be Suicide here in Florida as Gators would be all over it. I just don't like the name "Suicide Duck"- Kind of over the top and not original? Not sure why my emotions are extremely negative regarding this Duck Lure which I have only glanced at in photo's.

Hey, How did you land that 30lb bag to win last weekend? "Suicide Duck in the west Cove, They were ripping the rod out of my hands".....I would imagine that nobody will ever say those words, and if they did I would be positive it is a joke since it is a "Suicide Duck". That's my rant for today. Love Monday's.

In fact, the next time I have a solid day, I am claiming "Suicide Duck" and see what people have to say about it. I tried saying "Buzz Plug" one time and everyone just laughed. I knew that lure was a scam and Bill Dance just doctor's the footage.

Okay, so if you had to choose between the SG duck or the Spro rat which would you choose?

I don't see the duck as a bass bait, more like a pike or musky bait.  Yes, I have personally seen both take ducklings. Personally, I'd get neither.  There's more interesting topwaters out there.  If you like the rat, look at the MS Mini Slammer.  Way better, proven bait.

i agree with that, in fact i think the MS mini slammer is on my short list of things to purchase on the next sale!

if you look at most of the savage gear product videos , they are all targeting and catching pike , i'm sure they are trying to market them as dual purpose into the bass market , yeah , i'll eventually buy the rat because i like the top hook option , but i won't buy the duck ..

Not saying that it didn't catch the bass. But he could have just as easily caught it on something else and stuck that lure in its mouth for sales promotion.

I am sure people will purchase this topwater duck in large numbers if their favorite bass fishing pro tells them it's what helps them get big bags during tournaments.

Lots of posts sound like I never caught a fish on abc that lure stinks but I kill them on xyz you should get that. Throw abc or xyz on any given day or in a certain condition and one could slay the fish. Ya never know...if the duck looks good give it a shot.

I like that the duck can be rigged with the hooks on the back instead of the belly for a little more weedless presentation. Of course, those legs aren't going to work in a lot of weeds, but would also make it come over laydowns and through brush easier. The duck can look like various terrestrial prey items. I imagine it would look a lot like a mouse, rat, frog, bird, whatever a bass might be feeding on. Savage Gear makes proven baits at very affordable prices and are one of the best companies out there at listening to their customers to their wants and needs. 

I bought one, I'm going to catch fish on it, and there's nothing anyone can do to stop me

I checked it out...$32 for a bait...no way, that's definitely way over my per bait limit! I have a hard time coughing up $20 for a single bait...lol. If I go with a rat/mouse bait it will most likely be the Spro BBZ1 Rat OR maybe the Live Target Hollow Body Field Mouse.

While you have been debating spending over $100 bucks on spooks, ducks, etc., another guy caught 30 good fish on one $30 bait.  Think about it.
