Looking for a heavy fast action rod for pitching laydowns and docks with Jigs.  Will be using 20lb Fluoro.

Found this:

Heavy 7'3'' Fast tip.  How do you guys rate this rod?  Any other suggestions?

Thanks,

The LEW

For $150 I'd get the Tatula instead of the Tatula XT. They have a 7'2" Heavy model that will do what you're wanting to do.

However, from what I understand, you shouldn't get a Heavy for that application. You want the rod to load easily if you're skipping around docks and trees. If you're pitching around grass, that's when you need a heavy rod. Just something to consider. I'm no expert.

It all depends on the rod maker. Some rods marked hvy are closer to a med hv an vice versa. The $150 budget opens you up to some really nice rods. The Tatulas are nice but check out a Dobyns Fury FR 734C. It is exactly what you asked for. It is 7'3" hvy 1/4 to 1 ounce and it retails for $109.

Take a look at two rods from Irod. the first is the Irod Genesis II IRG744C, the next suggestion is the Irod Genesis II "Fred's Magic Stick" IRG 754. I know some friends on another board that love these two rods.  My wife and I own three Irods and love them.  These sell for $149 from TW.

I agree. I use the same model as my jog rod and I couldn't be happier with it. I think you could get away with using the heavy rod around docks, I use mine around both docks and grass and it performs great.

You can get the regular tatula for 110 and the tatula XT for 80 off of sportsmans outfitters site. I'd get a 7'-7'6" medium heavy fast or extra fast for an all around jig rod if you fish mostly 1/2nd and under. If you fish a lot of heavy cover or use a lot of footballs or 1/2 oz+ jigs, I'd get the heavy. The 7'1 mh xf tatula rod is a great all around jig rod and the 7'4" heavy "frog" rod is a great all around heavy cover and big bait rod. I use the frog rod for frogs, jigs, swimbaits, big worms, big spinnerbaits, flutter spoons, Carolina rigs, and about anything except deep cranks. It will handle those too, it's just a little too fast though for what I prefer in a crank rod. Excellent all around rod though. The Fenwick aetos is another great bottom contact rod with excellent sensitivity and build quality in all the models I own. Any of the mh or heavy power rods would work great for jigs. They have been on clearance on several sites but the cheapest has been on the fenwick site for under 100 bucks. If you could deal with a 6'8" rod, the powell max 3d 684c on sheltons clothings site for 100 bucks is another great deal. It makes an excellent all around rod that can handle 1/4-well over 1 oz in weight and is a cleanly built, excellent rod for the money. There are lots of great rods in the price range but these are all cleanly built rods with good guides from reputable companies with great warranties. If you want a very nice rod that retails for over 150(except the tat xt, but it's still well over 100), and at a price that leaves you quite a bit in your budget to go towards a reel, line, or lures, then I would definitely take a look at these 4 models

Take a look at Irod Gen II, 7'4" MH casting rod that Catt suggested, IRG744C.

I picked up a 7'2 mh/xf Fenwick Aetos when they were on sale for $95, I use it as one of my jig rods. It is great, you can easily tell all the bottom structure, and it has a great backbone. Check them out!
